I was awarded a Lawn to Legumes grant, which I had applied for to use on the septic wildflower planting. I received the grant one week too late and couldn't use that project for the grant, since I had already purchased the seed. So I needed to plan another project! ๐Ÿ˜ This mostly native area in our backyard yard has been in the works for several years. It has filled in well and needs some rearranging and more space. This is my grant project. I spent most of today, trimming the overgrown dogwoods, deep down w**ding and used the flame w**d torch to begin the expansion. It was a beautiful day to play in the yard!

This hot, humid wet July takes me back to the 1980-90's. Growing up in Iowa, the best way for kids to make money was detasseling corn. I spent summers detasseling from age 13-21. I started at $3.35/hr and we received a 10ยข raise every year we came back. Despite it being insanely hot hard work walking through corn fields, we worked every minute possible because it was our money for the entire year. Child labor laws required they give us the opportunity to stop after 8 hours, but we were always so excited to go back out to earn time and a half! I just had to get home with enough time to shower before going to work at my evening retail job. We didn't have fancy water bottles so we used plastic gallon milk jugs, filled them with water and put them in the freezer every night. I can still hear, "It's going to be hot tomorrow. We'll start at 6." I definitely learned a solid work ethic through this experience and was hired for my first post college job because, "If you can detassel corn, you can do anything." I also blame those years on my now intolerance of heat, my inability to eat corn and the dark skin patches from years of excessive sun burns. We may work hard now, but nothing like what we did in our youth. ๐Ÿ˜

A few beauties in our native prairie today. After 9 years of having to mow our prairie to control the Canadian thistles, this is the first year we have been able to manage that predator by hand cutting only. It has been a lot of work, but well worth it. We will finally get to see the blooms of the later native forbs that have been growing here! It's an exciting year on our prairie ๐Ÿ˜

We mow too much. I've been saying it for years. Organic land management lends itself to a lot of mowing for w**d control. We do have A LOT of land in native prairie and wildflowers, but it's not in areas that you would see passing by our farm. In our area, native planting is a fight with invasive wild parsnips when you get near the road ditches. On the rest of our farm, I've been able to control it by constantly being on the hunt for it and cutting or digging any that I find. My long term goal has been to put our entire front yard into wildflower/ pollinator habitat. I started several years ago with planting a barrier row of willows in the ditch, which also helps with dust control. This year, when our new septic system was installed, I took the opportunity to seed the large area that was dug up with wildflowers. I expect that it will be 3 years before it starts looking like a pollinator habitat, but I accept that it's a marathon and not a sprint!

My little buddy is sporting a beautiful Swiss cowbell that I found thrifting a while back. It helps me keep track of where he is in the yard while I'm getting things done. And it sounds beautiful clanging as he bops around ๐Ÿ˜Š. I might need to think of a Swiss name for him. "Bellboy" and "Little Buddy" are what comes naturally but he deserves a more authentic name.

Paul has a new friend, and I have a new incredible wool producer! I can't wait to spin it ๐Ÿ˜. He (yet to be named) is 3 months old, 1/4 Icelandic and 3/4 Border Leicester. He was bottle raised and believes he should be our pet. If he continues with this temperament, we will keep him in with the goats & mini horses to be interactive with the guests. Welcome to Schmidt Farm โค๏ธ

We have a few more of the native flowers blooming in our prairie. Here are a few. I was distracted by the steam rising from the ground vents after the rain passed๐Ÿง. That never ceases to amaze me.
