Istanbul to Budapest by private train, with Peles and Bran castles on the way.

The Golden Eagle Danube Express climbs Bulgaria's Shipka Pass on its way to Veliko Tarnovo, then turns north into Transylvania for Peles Castle at Sinaia and Bran Castle above Brasov, followed by the walled towns of Sighisoara and Sibiu. The journey opens in Istanbul with a night at the Four Seasons Sultanahmet, steps from the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia, and ends on the Danube in Budapest.

The tour page has the full seven-day itinerary, stop by stop.

Green Spain is the corner of the country that never dried out — emerald hills, sea mist and wild Atlantic beaches along the Cantabrian coast.

The run from the Basque Country to Galicia takes in Frank Gehry's titanium Guggenheim at Bilbao, the seafront promenades of Santander, medieval Santillana del Mar beside the painted caves of Altamira, and the glacial lakes and gorges of the Picos de Europa. It finishes in Santiago de Compostela, where the Camino does.

Our guide covers both trains that work this coast — El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo and the Costa Verde Express — and where each one stops.

South America's only luxury sleeper train climbs to roughly 4,800 metres before it drops toward Arequipa.

The Andean Explorer runs between Cusco, Puno and Arequipa with cabins made up for the night, a dining car serving Peruvian tasting menus, an observation carriage and a piano bar. Most guests take the three-day, two-night crossing, breaking overnight at Puno for the floating Uros islands on Lake Titicaca. The Hiram Bingham is the other half of a Peru rail trip — a day train up the Urubamba valley to Machu Picchu, with brunch and live Andean music outbound and dinner on the return.

Our guide covers both trains, and how to sequence them around the altitude.

The Al Andalus route through southern Spain does not call at Granada, and that surprises most travelers.

The train is a restored 1920s Belle Époque rake that runs seven days between Seville and Madrid, stopping at Cordoba, Cadiz, Jerez, Caceres, Merida, Toledo and Aranjuez. That means the striped arches of the Mezquita, an Atlantic peninsula city that claims to be the oldest continuously inhabited in Western Europe, the sherry bodegas and equestrian schools of Jerez, and Toledo standing over its bend in the Tagus.

Our guide walks through each city on the itinerary, and what the route does and does not include.

Six days from Taormina to Venice, aboard the Golden Eagle Danube Express.

The train crosses the Straits of Messina overnight before Palermo, where an Arab-Norman tour ends with an aperitif at the Teatro Massimo. In Ragusa you roll pasta by hand at a cooking demonstration; at Maratea, a pizza-making class at the Santavenere Hotel sits below the Christ the Redeemer statue. Verona's Roman ruins come before the run into Venice. Cabins are private en-suite compartments in Deluxe or Superior Deluxe Class, and all meals, excursions, gratuities and transfers are included.

The tour page has the full day-by-day itinerary and cabin details.

On Spain's luxury trains there is no optional-excursion list and no credit card handed over in a hotel lobby.

Every breakfast, lunch and dinner is included, with Spanish wines poured to match the menu - sherry-country cooking and Andalusian classics in the south, Cantabrian seafood, Asturian cider-house fare and Cabrales cheese in the north. So is every guided excursion and every entrance fee: the Guggenheim Bilbao, Altamira, Seville's cathedral and Alcazar, the Mezquita of Cordoba, the equestrian ballet in Jerez. A dedicated coach shadows the train the whole way, and evenings bring live music in the lounge cars.

Our guide sets out the full accounting - what is in, what is out, and how payment works.

Three trains carry the Orient Express name, and they share almost nothing but the name.

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express runs hand-restored 1920s and 1930s Wagons-Lits sleeping cars, back in service since 1982, on a signature London-Venice route that begins aboard the vintage British Pullman before guests cross the Channel. La Dolce Vita is the opposite: an entirely new Italian train, commissioned by Accor's Orient Express brand and launched in 2025. The Eastern & Oriental Express has run independently through the Malay Peninsula since the early 1990s.

Our guide sets the three side by side - the eras they evoke, the routes, and the cabin categories.

The largest cabin on Spanish rails measures 12.82 square meters and comes with its own living room.

That is the Deluxe Suite on the Transcantábrico Gran Lujo — a separate bedroom, a sofa that converts to a third bed, an en-suite bathroom with a tub or shower, and only 28 guests on a 12-car train. Al Ándalus runs smaller at 8.26 and 6.58 square meters across its two classes, and the Costa Verde Express smaller still at roughly 6, with a 1.35 x 1.80 m matrimonial double.

Our guide compares every cabin type on all three trains: sizes, beds, bathrooms.

Choosing between Spain's three luxury trains is the decision everything else follows from.

The Al Ándalus takes the classic south in Belle Époque carriages — Seville, Córdoba, Jerez, Toledo and five UNESCO cities. El Transcantábrico Gran Lujo crosses Green Spain in eight days with just 28 guests, in the largest suites on any Spanish train at 12.82 square metres. The Costa Verde Express is the original Spanish train cruise, six days along the north coast. Each train runs weekly and alternates direction, and the itinerary is the same either way, so choose by where you want to fly in and out.

Our step-by-step guide walks through route, direction, cabin category and how far ahead to reserve.

India runs three great luxury trains, and they are not three versions of the same journey.

Palace on Wheels is the original, built from refurbished carriages once used by Rajasthan's maharajas and the Viceroy of India, and it still runs the single loop that made it famous: Delhi, Jaipur, Ranthambore, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, Agra. Maharajas' Express is the newest stock and the only one whose seasonal routes range beyond Rajasthan to Khajuraho, Varanasi and Mumbai. Deccan Odyssey is Mumbai-anchored, with a spa, a gym and a bar alongside the heritage theming.

Our guide compares all three by route, cabin style and who each one actually suits.
