The beach is a golf cart ride away. Here's what that day looks like.

Morning starts slowly at Hale Mele, then it’s time to hop on the golf cart and head to the Beach Club.

A little time in the water, snorkeling when the conditions are right, and plenty of room for the kids to splash around and play. No big agenda. Just a few hours enjoying the coast together.

Eventually, everyone’s ready for lunch. Then it’s back on the golf cart and home again — sandy, happy, and probably ready for a little downtime.

We love days like this because they feel easy. One of those vacation days where you don’t need to plan much beyond where you’re headed next.

Rain changed your plans? Here's your Big Island Plan B.

A little rain doesn’t have to mean giving up on the day. Our latest blog rounds up practical ways to adjust your plans while still enjoying your time on the island.

Think a slow morning exploring local shops, a good meal somewhere nearby, a visit to a coffee farm, or choosing an indoor activity when the weather calls for it. And when the rain passes, there are plenty of places around the island that are still worth exploring.

We put together a few of our favorite rainy-day options so you can have a backup plan ready without spending your vacation constantly checking the forecast.

Be honest. Which Hawaiʻi traveler are you?

🌅 The Early Riser — sunrise is non-negotiable. You’re up before everyone else with coffee in hand.

🏖️ The Beach Bum — one good beach could happily be the whole itinerary. Why complicate things?

🗺️ The Explorer — your itinerary has an itinerary. You want the hikes, lookouts, local food, and hidden spots.

🏡 The Homebody — give you a pool, snacks, a comfortable place to relax, and nowhere to be. Perfect.

🌺 The Little-Bit-of-Everything Traveler — somehow you’re up for sunrise, at the beach by noon, exploring in the afternoon, and back home for a slow evening.

Honestly, there’s no wrong answer. And sometimes the best trips are the ones where everyone in the group gets a little bit of what they want.

Pack this. Leave that. The real list from families who've done it.

Pack water shoes. Leave the uncomfortable extra shoes you probably won’t wear.

Pack reef-safe sunscreen. Leave the oversized beach gear you can easily borrow or pick up once you arrive.

Pack a light layer for breezy evenings. Leave the heavy jacket—you’re coming to Hawaiʻi, after all.

Pack a reusable water bottle, a swimsuit you actually love, and a little room in your suitcase for the things you’ll inevitably bring home.

The goal isn’t to pack for every possible scenario. It’s to bring what makes your days easier and leave some of the “just in case” stuff behind.

Because at Hale Mele, we’d much rather see you spending your time outside, exploring Mauna Lani, or gathered around the table than sorting through an overpacked suitcase.

We keep getting asked what ‘pod style’ means. Here's the honest answer.

It simply means having private sleeping areas paired with shared spaces where everyone can come together.

For a family trip, that can make a real difference. Grandparents can have their own space. Parents can settle in for the night while the kids are winding down. Early risers and late sleepers don’t all have to follow the same schedule.

Then, when everyone is ready to be together, there’s room to gather, eat, talk, and enjoy the day.

We like the idea because it feels a little more like how families actually live: together when you want to be, and with a little breathing room when you need it.

At Hale Mele, the layout is designed around that balance of connection and privacy.

We asked guests what surprised them. This came up every time.

It’s easy to picture the pool or outdoor kitchen as amenities, but once guests arrive, these spaces often become part of the rhythm of the whole stay.

Morning coffee by the garden. A swim between beach days. Dinner outside while everyone catches up. An evening around the gazebo with nowhere else to be.

We chose three guest reviews that capture those moments better than we ever could. Their words are a good reminder that sometimes it’s not the big plans that make a Hawaiʻi stay memorable—it’s having a comfortable place to gather, relax, and spend time together.

That’s what we hoped to create at Hale Mele: outdoor spaces that feel like a natural extension of home.

Waimea in September. It's unlike anything else on the island.

“Paniolo” is the Hawaiian word for Hawaiʻi’s ranching and cowboy tradition, shaped by generations of ranch families and the unique culture that grew around them.

Paniolo Festival Week, September 14–19, is a chance to experience that heritage up close. The week brings together a parade, cultural events, live music, local food, and traditions that have deep roots in Waimea and the surrounding ranching community.

It’s a different side of the Big Island than you might see along the coast—and that’s exactly what makes it worth adding to your itinerary. Spend a day exploring Waimea, take in the festivities, enjoy some local food, and get a feel for a community with a story all its own.

For dates, events, and the full festival schedule, visit the official Paniolo Festival website.

Fall in Hawaiʻi is the best-kept secret in travel.

September brings a different kind of rhythm to the island. Warm days, golden afternoon light, calm stretches of water, and plenty of reasons to spend a little more time outside.

At Hale Mele, it’s the small moments we love most this time of year. Coffee in the morning, a swim before the day gets busy, an easy walk along the coast, and lingering outside as the light starts to soften.

There’s no need to rush from one plan to the next. September is an invitation to slow down, settle in, and enjoy the simple parts of being together in Hawaiʻi.

If you’re thinking about a Big Island getaway, this might be the month worth putting on your list.

Late summer has a lot going for it. The weather is typically warm and settled, making it easy to enjoy slow mornings at home and full days exploring the coast.

It’s also a nice time to settle into a more relaxed pace. Spend the morning at the beach, head out for a swim or snorkel, explore nearby trails, then come home and enjoy dinner together.

In our latest blog, we’re sharing why late summer can be such a comfortable time to visit Mauna Lani, from the weather and activities to what the overall experience feels like.

If you’re still deciding when to plan your Big Island trip, we hope it helps make the choice a little easier.

September brings another side of Hawaiʻi to life.

If you’re staying on the Kohala Coast this month, consider making the drive to Waimea for Paniolo Festival Week, happening September 14–19, 2026. The week celebrates Hawaiʻi Island’s paniolo heritage through community events, music, local food, artisans, keiki activities, and equestrian traditions, culminating in the annual Paniolo Parade on September 19.

It’s a wonderful reminder that there’s so much more to explore beyond the resort areas. A day in Waimea can add a different rhythm to your trip—and a little more connection to the history and culture of the island.
