Located in the heart of Killarney National Park, Muckross is Kerry’s leading visitor attraction, renowned for its stunning scenery and cultural heritage. The estate features the grand 19th-century Muckross House, vibrant craft workshops, school house, a Garden Restaurant and a 1920s-style working farm.

The house was built between 1839 and 1843 for Henry Arthur Herbert and his wife, watercolorist Mary Balfour Herbert. Designed by Scottish architect William Burn, it was the fourth home of the Herbert family on the estate. Although originally planned to be more elaborate, the design was scaled back, likely at Mary’s request. Today, the rooms reflect the refined lifestyle of the 1800s, while the basement hints at the busy lives of the household staff.

After a failed auction in 1899, the estate was quietly purchased by Lord Ardilaun of the Guinness family, who had family ties to the Herberts. Though he owned Muckross, he and his wife Olivia spent little time there, instead leasing it out as a shooting and fishing lodge.
