Think back to your favorite Michigan summer memory. The sun glistening off the Great Lakes, the quiet calm of an inland lake at dawn, and the sound of laughter on the water. Our lakes are where some of our best memories are made, and we want to ensure everyone makes it home safely to create more.

That’s why the Michigan Department of Natural Resources is teaming up with the U.S. Coast Guard for Operation Dry Water from July 3-5.

🛑 The Reality of Impaired Boating 🛑
Every trip out should end with a safe return to your friends and family. Boating under the influence changes lives in an instant.

The Leading Danger: Alcohol is the leading contributing factor in recreational boating deaths, accounting for 20% of boating fatalities nationally.

The Law: Operating a boat with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 or above is illegal—the exact same as driving a car.

The Compound Effect: Sun, wind, noise, and wave motion actually intensify the effects of alcohol and drugs, causing impairment much faster than on land. This applies to ma*****na, prescription medications, and over-the-counter drugs, too.

To keep our waters safe over the July Fourth holiday, Michigan conservation officers will be conducting heightened boating under the influence patrols and enforcement.

Our goal isn't to spoil your holiday, it's to make sure everyone makes it back to the dock.

One of Torch Lake's busiest weekends of the year is almost here, and the choices we make over the next few days can have a lasting impact on the lake we all love.

As Fourth of July visitors arrive, Torch Conservation encourages everyone to help Care for Torch Lake by packing out all litter, boating responsibly, and remembering to Clean, Drain, and Dry your boats, kayaks, paddleboards, and other watercraft after every use. These simple steps help prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species, including quagga mussels, and keep Torch Lake healthy for generations to come.

A little extra care this holiday weekend goes a long way. Thank you for doing your part!
