🌲Find Your Trail in the Black Hills! 🥾

There’s no better way to slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air and experience the beauty of the Black Hills and Badlands than on foot. With more than 450 miles of marked trails throughout the Black Hills National Forest and surrounding state and national parks, there’s a trail for every kind of adventurer. Whatever your pace or experience level, there’s a trail waiting for you.

Before you lace up, keep these hiking tips in mind:
✔️ Bring plenty of water and dress in layers. Black Hills and Badlands weather can change quickly.
✔️ Protect yourself from the sun and bugs. Sunscreen, bug spray and a hat can make your hike much more enjoyable.
✔️ Know before you go. Check your route, trail conditions and weather before heading out.
✔️ Share your plans. Let someone know where you’re going and when you expect to return.
✔️ Hike smart. Stay on designated trails, know your limits and bring a fully charged phone.

🚙🌲 Ready to explore the Black Hills from a different perspective?

One of the best ways to experience the Black Hills National Forest is from the seat of an OHV! With miles of designated motorized trails winding through the forest, riders can discover scenic overlooks, rugged terrain and some of the Black Hills’ most beautiful landscapes along the way.

👉 Before you hit the trails, make sure you have your 2026 Motorized Trail Permit!
🎟️ 7 Consecutive Day Permit — $20
🎟️ Annual Permit — $25

Motorized Trail Permits are available for purchase at the Black Hills Visitor Information Center. You can also purchase your permit online at blackhillsbadlands.com/BHVIC.

For 110 years, the National Park Service has helped protect some of America’s most remarkable landscapes, stories and cultural treasures.

Right here in the Black Hills and Badlands, there are incredible places to experience that legacy. From the towering formations of Badlands National Park and the underground wonders of Jewel Cave National Monument and Wind Cave National Park, to the Cold War history preserved at Minuteman Missile National Historic Site, the iconic faces of Mount Rushmore National Memoriall, and the sacred landscape of Devils Tower National Monument, each site tells a story of the land, the people and the history that shaped this region.
