While Mount Rushmore was completed in 1941, the Crazy Horse Memorial is still being carved today, funded entirely through private donations with no federal money. It's a striking contrast between the two monuments and a story worth hearing in person. September's quieter crowds make it an easy add-on to your day.

Today we pause to honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and the courage shown by so many in the hours and days that followed. Mount Rushmore has long stood as a symbol of what this country can be at its best: resilient, unified, and enduring. Wherever you are today, we hope you take a moment to reflect and remember.

More than 400 workers spent 14 years carving Mount Rushmore, many of them local miners and craftsmen from the Black Hills. Remarkably, no lives were lost during the carving itself, a point of pride Borglum himself often noted. Their work is part of the story our guides share on every tour.
