Down below in quotes is just one of the many reasons why Black Elk Peak is not referred to as Harney Peak anymore. Years ago, we were some of the thousands of people who did not want the name change, ignorance is bliss, but then we educated ourselves and discovered what a monster Harney really was! We are not proponents of name changing everything because keeping history alive is important too, but on occasion, we feel, it's a good thing. We hope that most of you agree, especially folks from South Dakota who consider the highest point of S.D. and highest point east of the Rockies at 7,242 ft, very near and dear to their hearts and just perhaps will not continue referring to it as Harney Peak but Black Elk Peak after reading this history on Harney....
"On April 26, 1834, 33-year-old Major William S. Harney, (before becoming a General) viciously attacked a young woman named Hannah. Unable to find the keys to his in-laws home, Harney blamed Hannah and beat her with a rawhide strap until she told him where the keys were. This torture went on for three days, until Hannah died at Harney’s hands. Word spread of Hannah’s suffering and a coroner’s inquest, ruled on June 28, 1834 that Hannah “came to her death by wounds inflicted by William S. Harney.”"
Remember, this is just one of the many horrific stories. If Harney beat to death one of your or my relatives, I hope, we as people, would not be so quick to defiantly keep calling it Harney Peak like so many still do here in South Dakota.
