Some of you may know that StreamSweepers with government and private partners has launched a pilot river cleanup of the Tug Fork River in Mingo County, West Virginia to test methods to remove approximately 300,000 tires. This is an order of magnitude greater than what we are working to complete just across the state line on the Clinch River in Russell and Tazewell Counties. The Tug Fork Cleanup is part of the new Central Appalachia Cleanup in the Upper Big Sandy River including the Virginia counties of Dickenson and Buchanan, and the rivers Russell Fork and Levisa.

We do not need money. We do have an emergency need for 2 used 4wd trucks to borrow or lease beginning a week from today, 8/5/24 for two months of work in August and September. For a month we have explored every avenue to we can think of to get two more trucks, and as hard to believe as it may sound, this region of Appalachia doesn't have extra vehicles readily available and our current funders, as of this morning, will only pay for lease but not for purchase of vehicles.

Our plan is to somehow source the trucks from this part of the state and drive them to West Virginia the latter part of this week. Please if you have any leads on this, no matter how wacky, please let me know asap via email reply or call Mary Dennis @ 540-672-2542. If we don't launch the cleanup on Monday we will lose state funds for this project not only for this year, but potentially for next year, and years thereafter.

From establishing new programs, to growing existing efforts, those in attendance said the work has to begin from within the region in order to see change.

Without the contributions by donors, we would not be able to do what we do. The 2021 season was truly one for the record books. With 1,677 tires and 50,030 pounds of trash removed, it was our biggest season to date. We are looking forward to our 2022 season on the Clinch River, supported by donors like yourself.
