Fun Fact!

Did you know Red River's Main Street grocery has a German name? Glen Calhoun came from Fort Worth in 1960 and built Glen's Superette on High Street. His son Ted bought Johnny's Store in 1964 and ran Red River Grocery year-round until winter 1969. Father and son then closed both stores, bought Main Street land, and opened Der Markt — German for the market — in June 1970, as town tried an alpine look with the Alpine Lodge and Eisenhut and Edelweiss condos. A 1979 expansion added a third again. Town turned western instead, but the family kept the name and loves being called the Deer Market, or just the Der.
