Coasters & Castles Travel- Barry Branaugh

Coasters & Castles Travel- Barry Branaugh I plan vacations for people who want new life experiences, to create lifelong memories, and find the hidden gems the world has to offer.

Travel has always been a part of my life. Growing up, my family took trips around the U.S., sparking my love for exploring new places and cultures. In 2012, I joined my daughter on a school trip to Scotland, England, and France, and I was hooked. With over 32 years as a high school Social Studies and Language Arts teacher, I've taught about global history, deepening my passion for travel. A stando

ut moment was visiting Omaha Beach in Normandy, reflecting on the D-Day landing. In 2016, I helped plan my mother’s dream trip to Ireland and the UK for our family. That experience inspired me to pursue a career helping others plan their travels. I love combining history, culture, and relaxation in travel. I’ve journeyed through Central Europe, Scotland, Ireland, and beyond, enjoying everything from whiskey tastings to tropical getaways like a Princess Cruise to the Mexican Riviera and a week in Belize. I've traveled to Canada, Mexico, Belize, Ireland, the UK, France, Germany, Austria, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland, Hungary, Spain, and Portugal. I focus on creating personalized trips that meet both group and individual needs. It is truly and honor and pleasure to be able to help people reach their travel goals!

Like in Poland, Austria has salt mines near Hallstatt. This goes back much further, however, first being excavated between 800 and 500 BCE. Salt is still excavated today. One of the most popular sites is Hallstatt Skywalk which offers a panorama of the village, Lake Hallstatt and the surrounding Dachstein Alps (about 1000 feet above the village). Since being named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hallstatt is a spot of overtourism. While the village economy is dependent on tourism, they have reduced the number of tour buses per day, and began a system of assigned times for tour buses to come.

Southwest of Salzburg, also along the German border, is Innsbruck. Innsbruck's beginnings are geographical in nature. It proved to be an easy place to cross the Inn River, and was also near the easiest accessible route over the Alps (known as Brenner Pass today). Being near the Alps, Innsbruck is a major tourist attraction, especially for wintertime activities. The city hosted both the 1964 and 1976 Winter Olympic games.

Like Krakow, Poland, Salzburg was occupied by the Roman Empire as a result of its invasion in 15 BCE. At the foot of the northern Alps, Salzburg has many outdoor opportunities in its' vicinity. The Old Town portion of the city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has many popular sites to visit, including the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

In addition to the arts, Vienna has a long history of intellectual and academic thought. The father of modern psychology, Sigmund Freud, Freud came to Vienna to attend university and made the city his home for most of the rest of his life. He established his practice in his home (now the Freud Museum) and continued to develop his ideas. As a Jewish man, he was not in favor when the N***s took over in 1938. His plan was to stay, but friends encouraged him to leave for his own safety. He died the following year from jaw cancer in his new home in London.

Vienna has a long-standing tradition of art and culture, including theater, opera, classical music, and fine arts. Vienna has long been a center for classical music, including both native composers and musicians who moved there to work. The most famous, of course, is Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Born in Salzburg, Mozart rose to fame during his short life in Vienna.

Vienna is well known for its food and drink. Influenced by Hungarian, Czech, Polish, Jewish, Italian, Balkan, and French cuisines, Wiener Schnitzel (Vienna Schnitzel) is a popular entree, and strudel a tasty dessert. Bordered by Germany to the north and Italy to the south, beer and wine are also popular beverages in Austria.

The capital and largest city in Austria is Vienna. It has been a focal point for art, music, culture, intellectual thought, business, and of course, politics. The Hofburg palace was the home of the Hapsburg monarchy but now is the home (part of it) of the president of Austria. Construction began in the 13th century and was ongoing until 1913. The palace and the gardens rival that of Versailles outside of Paris.

Our final stop on our tour of central Europe is Austria. Founded by Celtic tribes, it became part of the Roman Empire in 16 BCE. After the fall of the Roman Empire, it became part of the Kingdom of Italy, the Kingdom of the Franks, and then the Holy Roman Empire. For a while, Vienna was the capital of the Empire. It was the seat of the Hapsburg Empire, which combined with Hungary to form the Austro-Hungarian Empire, which was broken up after World War I. During World War II, it was under N**i control, and then Allied control after the war until independence in 1955. From the cosmopolitan cities like Vienna, to the Alps, Austria has much to offer!
