Pérouges, in eastern France, is a walled medieval town that feels frozen in time. Founded by farmers and craftsmen in the Middle Ages, it later became a stronghold thanks to its strategic hilltop position. The cobbled lanes and stone houses are so well preserved that filmmakers often use it as a backdrop for historical movies.

The heart of the town is Place du Tilleul, with its old lime tree planted after the French Revolution. Around the square you’ll find small cafés and shops that keep Pérouges lively despite its tiny size.

A local specialty not to miss is the galette de Pérouges, a thin, sweet bread topped with sugar and butter. It’s simple but famous enough that people make the trip here just for a slice.
