I see a lot of social media posts of hunters some with and some without outfitters wearing illegal camoflauge orange vests. In the state of CO while hunting any rifle or muzzleloader season (minus bighorn and mountain goat) a hunter is required to wear 500 sq inches of blaze orange/pink…. Not camoflauge orange blaze orange/pink. This is typically a normal vest and a hat. Technically it needs to all be visible so having an orange pullout or an extra vest wrapped around ur hunting pack could be a good idea.

You are not required to wear blaze orange while archery hunting, although it is suggested for safety. I have confirmed with CPW that it is LEGAL to wear camoflauge blaze orange while archery hunting. wearing a camo blaze hat could be a smart safety concern.

And just to give some information elk and deer cannot see the color orange through their color spectrum, it’s just a grey to them….

There is always a few key things to look for when recieving “outfitting services” and a few rules some don’t know about that could potentially get you in trouble. It is your responsibility to ensure the “Outfitter” is licensed, permitted and insured.
1. Anyone performing any guiding, packing or services on USFS or BLM Public lands is required to be registered by the State Regulating Agency DORA, you can google search “DORA Outfitters” and then search a business, owners name, or address to see if the Outfitter is licensed
2. You can call the local USFS or BLM office to ensure the Outfitter is permitted to operate on public lands
3. You can Request to see the outfitting Certificate of Insurance

Outfitters are required to perform their services within their permitted area, going outside their area is a violation. It is illegal to perform any services on public lands without being permitted. This includes guiding hunters, packing in or out gear/game, renting or leasing animals unless picked up from a private property, setting up and providing gear in the field, for any monetary value or trade.

If the illegal outfitter is caught you as the person who hired them can also have your assets seized.

So make sure when hiring an outfitter they have all the credentials and are operating legally.

little something we wrote to the commission and Director this morning, requesting a very simple but very impactful gesture to us

Good Morning CPW Commission and Director Davis,
I have been following this Wolf Introduction since the beginning, through the good, the bad, the what are we thinking moments, i have attended every CPW Commission meeting for wolf updates and information. I have attended many Wolf Seminars and the CPW Range Riding Seminar. I am an Outfitter and volunteer range rider from Redstone, CO. I know many Ranchers and Outfitters across the entire western slope, from the ones first affected by wolves prior to release, to ones being affected now, and ones that aren't affected. We will just say that regardless i have a very large reach across this state and what has been going on between Ranchers/Outfitters, CPW Staff and wolves.

If you all have not noticed that Ranchers and Outfitters are pretty upset with the CPW Commission, Director Davis and the Senior Staff calling the shots. If you all havent noticed the exasperation from the general public being affected by these wolves and the ones you made promises to, i highly suggest you get informed quickly. i'm sure many of the boots on the ground CPW Staff is grinding their teeth smooth from having to be the face of this anger and disapproval, all while trying to perform their normal duties. If you haven't noticed the biggest thing we are all upset about is the lack of transparency that was promised to us in January, directly by Director Davis.

The way the January release was carried out really made a lot of folks feel betrayed, especially when just days before, they were pushed aside by 10 of the 11 commissioners, im not sure why some of our commissioners who are supposed to represent the sportsman and agricultural side went against us, hope it wasn't from political pressure or threats from the pro wolf community, since you are a volunteer board for the people not political agendas. But promises were made for more transparency, information and resources. That has been a complete kick in the pants, and there's many out there Director who wouldn't shed a tear if you stepped down from your position. Speaking with ranchers, some get told of wolves in the area, some don't get told, Ranchers find tracks and never get a confirmation of any wolf in the area. This is how the rumors get started and then people get more and more upset when they think Bob was told but they weren't. That being said, i want to get onto my request to assist not only the CPW try to rebuild some trust with the community that ultimately supports them, but also give us all a little more of your promise and that's a little transparency.

Now this transparency isn't going to be that big of a deal in all honesty its really not a whole lot but i guarantee that if this is done it will benefit not only Ranchers and Outifitters, but the general public and the wolves. So here is my request, there are 28 Collared wolves in CO, i am asking that when CPW releases their watershed map that on the first day of that map or randomly some time in that 30 days that CPW releases an exact location of each wolf. Now yes releasing a point of a wolf shows where they were, but when its 30 days old it shouldn't be an issue. This will just let the people know where those wolves were exactly for one GPS point in a 30 day period. Once the wolves have been confirmed denning, then CPW just releases at the bottom of the map that Female Wolf X and Male Wolf X have denned and will not be reporting GPS locations any longer. This is a really simple way to give more transparency without in fact hurting anything in the long run. I know, i know, were all scarred that the blood thirsty SSS crowd is going to use this to their advantage and go kill all the wolves. But lets be truly honest with ourselves 10 collared wolves released and made it through half a winter, summer and hunting season. 2 died of now we know natural causes (other wolves and a mountain lion) and one was still supposedly shot. If wolves were truly in danger, people could have used the watershed map alone and went and killed all these wolves, there has been enough press release on the wolf in Mesa County and the one in Park County for anyone that was serious to go find them and kill them. The ranchers alone in Grand and Jackson County would have simply killed them off them selves if they truly were going to do it. But they haven't and until the person that shot the other wolf is found or USFWS releases the Necropsy results, we most likely will never know what actually happened to that wolf.

I am asking the Director and the Commission to give us all a little transparency and just give us 1 GPS location per wolf per month, i am going to guarantee that this little act is going to have a huge impact on CPW and the tension this Ballot Initiative has brought between the department and the Ranchers/Outfitters.

Thank you for the consideration and if i need to i will be filing a motion for this to be an agenda item at the Commission, otherwise we could just agree to do it and make it a really simple and easy gesture to the Ranching, Outfitting and Sportsman Community that you all have said to represent.

I was asked the other day if the wolf introduction was stressing me out…. The truth…. As an outfitter in Pitkin County YES IT IS. It is concerning me every single day. Just like livestock producers, producers have ways to be compensated for depredated livestock and indirect loss. Us outfitters don’t have anything. I have had several possible client phone calls asking “do you have wolves in your area?” My answer “yes they released wolves in Pitkin County, roughly 20 air miles from us”. “Ok thank you good luck”. Why are people worried? Well the idea of wolves hasn’t been thought out long term, it’s a short term idea currently…. Get wolves on the ground and get them breeding. CPW has their hands tied they have to do what has been made law, even if the true belief is it could decimate game populations. The false hope that wolves will help stop the spread of CWD has no scientific data and has been said “may” and “possibly”. Look at northern states that have way more wolves and CWD has been on the rise.

Outfitters have built a life doing something they love, whether it’s to help hunters fill a bucket list item, help hunters achieve their goals, provide services they otherwise couldn’t do themselves, many outfitters aren’t in it for the money, they are in it cause it’s a life they love. Just like many livestock producers, born into it, bought into it, but many aren’t there to be millionaires, they are there because we all love what we do. Just think of what many outfitters do, they care for their horses, they built a proffession, they have a special skill, lashing gear, weighing gear, packing into the back country, it’s not for everyone. But back to wolves, the idea is bring wolves back and they will regulate populations. Many elk and deer populations aren’t at sustainable numbers, this isn’t even with success rates, look at how many tags have gone from OTC to draw due to population issues. Now we bring in wolves that need more elk or deer to survive. Outfitters work off of healthy game populations, when non resident tags are cut, it cuts out bottom dollar. It’s unfortunate especially for the hate for non residents by many resident hunters, even though non residents pay for the game in this state.

Many outfitters have done very minimal in price increases due to the constant price increase for non resident tags. IMO drop camp and guided hunts have gained a lot more luxeroes over the 20 years I’ve been in outfitting myself. Upgraded cooking stoves, cots, pads, showers, food selection, even tents are better. This all costs more but outfitters haven’t been able to increase their prices because it becomes unaffordable for many people between tags, travel and an outfitter. The DIY movement has put a huge push into drop camps, or as I like to call it a DIY hunt with outfitter support. Guides are looking for hundreds of dollars a day in camp plus room and board when not in camp. It’s all increased but outfitters still haven’t raised their prices much.

The Colorado Outfitters Association is a great asset but not every outfitter is part of it. They tried to get compensation for outfitters before wolves were introduced in the stakeholder meetings but outfitters were thrown to the curb. It’s unfortunate, but that’s how it was. They fought for us that’s for sure.

Livestock producers have a huge voice, I’ve been a huge voice for the producers cause I care about them as well, but we need our non residents to put a voice out for not only us outfitters but against the wolves.
