WHYYYY would I pay $895 per year for a credit card I hardly use??? 😳

Let’s back up for a minute.

I like think of my credit cards as belonging to one of three categories:

✨Daily use cards. These are credit cards that I carry in my wallet and use regularly because they have high multipliers on daily spending categories, like groceries, gas, and dining out. They are my default cards when I am not working on meeting a minimum spend.

✨Sign up bonus cards. These are credit cards I open for the sign up bonus, but stop using after I meet the minimum spend. I’ll usually cancel or downgrade these after the first year.

✨Benefits cards. These are credit cards I keep open because the value of the benefits and credits that come with the card outweigh the annual fee. But…I don’t actually use these cards all that often!

The American Express Platinum card falls into the last category. While I do use it to pay for flights (5x points per dollar) and to use the various credits (Fine Hotels & Resorts, Resy dining, Lululemon, Hulu/Disney+, Walmart+, etc.), it doesn’t see the light of day otherwise!

I know it looks cool, but the Amex Platinum only gets 1x point per dollar on the vast majority of purchases, so it’s a pretty awful choice for everyday use.

Need help figuring out which card to add to your wallet next? šŸ’³

My #1 tip for safety when traveling with young kids? šŸ‘¦šŸ‘§

Dress them in bright colors! Neon = yes. Beige = no.

Aesthetics aside, it is absolutely easier to spot your kids in a crowd if they are wearing colors that stand out. šŸ©·šŸ’š

From packed playgrounds, to bustling city streets, to crowded airports, visibility makes a huge difference. It only takes a second to lose sight of your kids, and you’ll be glad you took the precaution if it ever happens to you!

So millennial moms…skip the neutrals and embrace bright colored clothing and outerwear! āļø

What on earth is a mattress run?? šŸØ

I’m so glad you asked! A mattress run is when you book a hotel stay that you wouldn’t otherwise book for the purpose of earning points and/or qualifying nights toward status with the hotel loyalty program.

It’s especially common at the end of the year, when business travelers and road warriors are getting set to lock in their status for the following year.

In my case, I did something a little different. Hyatt had two promotions running simultaneously. For one, we could earn 8,000 bonus points after staying eight nights at a Hyatt House or Hyatt Place before 9/7. For the other, we could earn 10,000 bonus points after staying 10 nights at any Hyatt before 10/6. šŸ™Œ

My husband had already stayed six nights for work trips and has a couple more planned for this month, but he would have been two nights short to earn the bonus for either promotion.

Fortunately, he had three Category 1-4 Free Night Awards (ā€œFNAsā€) available, and two were set to expire relatively soon. We had discussed squeezing in another trip this fall, but with our son adjusting to kindergarten and a holiday trip already planned, we didn’t have an immediate use for the FNAs. šŸ¤”

Our solution? We used two of the FNAs to book a local Hyatt House, allowing us to earn 18,000 bonus points from the promotions that we otherwise wouldn’t have earned!

And yep, we brought an empty suitcase to check in so we looked legit! 🤣

šŸŽ‰ That’s a wrap for 2025! šŸŽ‰

This year my household earned a record number of points. Over 1.3 MILLION, to be exact! My husband also switched his hotel loyalty from Marriott to Hyatt and achieved Hyatt Globalist status for the first time! šŸŒŽ

There were enough changes in the credit card world to make anyone’s head spin, but adapting to new rules is all part of the game and I am confident that there are plenty of opportunities to earn points for travel in the new year!

In 2026, I plan to cool it on Chase applications and focus more on Amex and Capital One. I’ll keep my balance of Chase points healthy by using my Ink Cash to buy gift cards at Staples and maxing out quarterly 5x categories on the Freedom and Freedom Flex. šŸ’³

I’m also curious about the Bilt 2.0 cards coming out in January and might consider adding one of those to my portfolio. And of course, I’ll be stacking like a boss with Rakuten and Capital One offers!

P.S. If you still haven’t signed up for Rakuten, the $50 bonus is available until the end of the year!! Comment or send me a DM for my referral link with the offer!

So where did all these points take us in 2025? Stay tuned for my annual trip recap coming soon! āœˆļø

NOTES: All stats are mine and my husband’s combined, except for credit score. Also, I only included points earned from credit card usage, sign up bonuses, and referral bonuses, and not points earned from business travel.

Do you want to become a points millionaire in 2026? Send me a DM and I’ll help you get started! šŸ‘

$67.10 for lie-flat business class seats on a transatlantic flight?? 🤯

Yep! After a fantastic two weeks in Spain and Portugal, we kept the party going by flying home in business class for less than the price of a steak dinner.

We flew from Lisbon to Toronto on TAP Air Portugal for only 63,000 miles + $67.10 per person! Instead of booking through TAP Air Portugal, which was charging a much higher rate for the same flight, I transferred credit card points and booked through Avianca’s LifeMiles program. āœˆļø

Points from American Express, Capital One, Citi, Bilt, and Wells Fargo all transfer directly to Avianca, which can be great option for booking Star Alliance flights.

Are you interested in earning points to fly business class for less than the cost of economy? If so, you’re missing out if you’re not following my account!!

Y’all know I have been singing praises to Rakuten for yearsā€¦šŸŽ¶

But they have truly outdone themselves by introducing a BRAND NEW partnership with Bilt! šŸ‘

Previously, you could choose to receive your quarterly Rakuten payout in cash back or Amex Membership Rewards (if you have a credit card that earns Membership Rewards). Now, you can receive your payout in the form of Bilt Rewards, and this might be the most valuable option of all!

Bilt has an amazing list of transfer partners, including Hyatt (!!!), United Airlines, Atmos (Alaska/Hawaiian Airlines), Japan Airlines, Turkish Airlines, and more. 🤩

Until now, Bilt Rewards have been hard to come by unless you have a Bilt credit card and use it to earn points on your rent payments. This new partnership with Rakuten opens up the possibility of racking up thousands of Bilt Rewards with minimal effort. šŸ™Œ

First, create free accounts with Bilt and Rakuten. Then link your Rakuten account with your Bilt account in the Bilt app (email addresses must match). Make sure Bilt Rewards is selected as your Rakuten payout method.

When you do your holiday shopping, make sure to click through Rakuten to get to the retailer’s website and use any credit card to pay. You’ll be racking up Bilt Rewards like crazy in addition to any rewards you earn on your credit card! šŸ›ļø

One more thing - if you sign up for Rakuten through my referral link, you’ll get a bonus of $50 or 5,000 Bilt Rewards after spending $50 within 90 days. By transferring 5,000 Bilt Rewards to Hyatt, you’ll have enough Hyatt points to book a night at a Category 1 hotel!
