American Airlines Suspends Six Routes As Jet Fuel Costs Surge
American Airlines is temporarily suspending six routes as rising jet fuel costs continue to pressure airline operations.
The airline told CBS News that it has adjusted select schedules for August and September because of elevated fuel costs. American said the routes are not being cut permanently and affected passengers will either be rebooked or offered a refund.
The suspended routes include:
Los Angeles to Cleveland
Los Angeles to Columbus
Los Angeles to Pittsburgh
Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
Charlotte to Ontario
Charlotte to Sacramento
Jet fuel is one of the biggest expenses for airlines, often making up about 25% to 30% of total operating costs. With global oil supplies under pressure from the ongoing Iran war, carriers are now looking for ways to protect their margins.
American is not the only airline reacting. Other carriers have also raised fees, added fuel surcharges, or reduced weaker routes as fuel prices climb.
For travelers, this is another reminder that fuel prices can quickly affect flight schedules, ticket prices, and airline route networks. For the aviation industry, it shows how fast global events can hit the bottom line.
