Wildwood Days 2nd annual Rib Cook Off 2014 being our first topic.

06/14/2026

Teams will start to show up this morning for the Pelota Mixteca games being held on Wildwood in front of Fireman's Park in Rio Dell. The street will be closed for a couple hours from Root 101 to Dollar General. Things get underway at 11 a.m. It's Day 2 of Fiesta del Rio . . . come on down and see this fast-moving game with five players on each team in what is described as a cross between handball and tennis, but without a net. The women who put on the twice-monthly community lunch at the Resource Center will have a traditional Mexican meal for sale - they started cooking at 6 a.m. at the fire hall - and there will be smoked BBQ from Smokin' Amens plus the fire truck beer booth will be open. Live music at noon.

06/13/2026

Warm and sunny today - come on down to the fire hall - bocce tournament at 11 (signups at 10); vendors, food trucks, music, kids bike rodeo 1-3, raffles and more. The fire dept. is selling beer. Monument Road plays 4-6.

July 4 is coming. If your pets are bothered by fireworks, now is the time to plan ahead - get an appointment at the vet for meds, get a vest that soothes them when they are alarmed, develop a plan to keep them safe indoors - fix that latch on the screen door or the gate in the yard or the hole in the fence so they don't get away and become lost. The 3-day July 4 weekend combined with the 250th anniversary of the nation's founding will probably make this a louder holiday than usual, so don't risk your happiness by losing your pet, please.

July 4 is coming - a time when many deal with pets upset by fireworks. Start making your plan now - an appointment with the vet to get meds, a security vest for soothing an animal in stress, a repaired door lock or gate latch to keep them home. So many animals escape and go missing during this holiday and with the full weekend (vs a mid-week celebration) and the nation's 250th birthday, it could be longer and louder than other years. Please do yourself and your pets a favor and plan ahead.

Mark your calendars for June 13 and 14 - the chamber is hosting Fiesta del Rio, a celebration of Hispanic culture, free and open to all, with a mix of activities that has something for everyone.

There will be a bocce tournament with sign-ups starting at 10 am on Saturday . . vendors and food trucks . . . local owners of 'disc dogs' - canines that compete in their ability to retrieve Frisbee-type objects - will be having a training session with their animals . . . the Community Resource Center will be hosting the annual bike rodeo in the afternoon . . . the fire department will be selling beer and other beverages both days . . . There will be a DJ from noon to 4 p.m. and then the band Monument Road will take the stage.

Sunday, teams are coming to compete in Pelota Mixteca, a game similar to handball, that is played outdoors, and a section of Wildwood between Root 101 and Dollar General will be closed for that. A group of local Latinas who sponsor the twice-monthly community luncheon at the Resource Center will put on a meal starting at noon featuring barbeque, beans and rice and homemade tortillas, and a popular band, Ultima Lexción, will play.

It is all happening at and adjacent to the fire hall in Rio Dell. Plus, it is Flag Day and the chamber volunteers will have the flags up on Wildwood. Come enjoy!

The chamber thanks Redwood Capital Bank and Ferndale dairies, among others, for their sponsorship of this event.

People have asked about the work being done on the 101 north of Rio Dell. While we are getting an update on that, here's what we reported in the free monthly chamber newsletter last October: Preliminary utility work and other staging is taking place ahead of next year’s start of a seismic retrofit of the Eel River bridge north of Rio Dell. PG&E is planning to use traffic control at the end of this month as part of this work, shifting lanes for two to three days, and to remove all traffic control equipment by Nov. 7.

The seismic retrofit project itself is anticipated to begin in 2026, with a construction cost of approximately $69.8 million, including more than $61.8 million in federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act funding and $8 million in state funding.

The project will partially replace the north frame and fully replace the south frame of the bridge structure, according to Myles Cochrane, Cal Trans public information officer. Seismic vulnerabilities were discovered in the bridge, which was built in1941 and repaired in 1965 and 1989.
