Enjoy a scenic and historic dinner at this week's featured spot: Old Mill Inn in Mattituck.

Tucked at the end of West Mill Road, where Mattituck Creek runs out toward the Long Island Sound, this unique spot has been standing since the early 1820s. It started as a tidal grist mill built by a farmer home from the War of 1812, ground grain until 1902, then became a tavern. During Prohibition it ran as a speakeasy with jazz bands most nights. The original drive shaft is still there at the bar, and guests have been signing the beams for over a century.

The view is just one reason to go! Boats slide past the deck, the water goes gold as the light drops, and dinner turns into a into relaxation and great food.

Locals aren't smarter than you. They just have tomorrow.

Ask anybody who lives out here and they'll tell you the East End runs on hours, not places.

Seven in the morning, when the farm stands are carrying tables out and the road belongs to you.
Ten on a weekday, on the deck of the ferry, wind and all.
Three in the afternoon at a raw bar, quiet enough that the person shucking tells you which creek they came out of.
Five o'clock in the rain, in a tasting room that's suddenly half empty.
Six thirty in September, water still warm, and maybe four other people on the whole beach.

Look at that list again. Not one of them is noon.
That's why a day out here always feels like you almost got it. You can have two of those hours. You can't have five.
Unless you stay.

They were going to put two nuclear reactors where Hallock State Park is located.

Now you'll find a trail that is a little over a mile, winding through young woods, past a pond. Then the ground climbs. Jacob's Hill is the high point, about 140 feet, and from the overlook the whole Sound opens up in front of you. That gray line across the water on a clear day is Connecticut, about 18 miles off.

In 1973 a power company wanted to build a nuclear plant with two reactors on this land. The farmers got themselves a lawyer and fought it through years of hearings, and in 1980 the company walked away.

Then the land just sat. New York State acquired it in 2002. Three hundred acres went back into farming, sold off to working farmers. The rest became Hallock State Park Preserve and didn't open to the public until 2017.

So a fight most people have never heard of is the only reason there are 225 acres of woods, pond, bluff and almost a mile of beach sitting out here instead.

Go in the morning. Wear shoes you do not mind scuffing, because the last stretch down is loose and the beach is stone, not sand. Watch the bluff for hawks. You may even spot a red fox!

Grab a room at a bed and breakfast or boutique hotel for a unique experience.

Not everyone can be in LA.
Someone's gotta hold it down in Riverhead, where the barn is the venue and the dance floor is grass.

Kinda chic to spend some time on the East End.

In 1840 a windmill crossed Peconic Bay on a barge. A Southold man had paid $200 for it, took it apart and hauled the pieces down to the shore with an ox team, and floated them over to Shelter Island.

These were machines, not monuments, and they cost a fortune. Hook Mill ran $1,320 to build in 1806, when the average house in East Hampton was about $270. Nobody scraps a machine like that. They moved it.

So they did, constantly: Beebe mill moved 5 times, the Water Mill windmill moved from North Haven, and the water mill itself moved twice. Nothing was left where it was built.

Most of the good ones came out of one East Hampton shop, where Nathaniel Dominy made clocks, furniture and windmills. His bill for the Shelter Island mill counted 186 days of work by hand.

East Hampton has more than any other town in America, and 2 you will never see. One on private grounds in Wainscott and 1 on Gardiners Island.

Do any still turn? Some say the blades come around once a year. Some say not in decades. Go settle it yourself. Stand beneath one and look up. The top was designed to rotate to catch the wind, turned by hand from the ground.

The East End Windmills are scattered across two forks and an island. Plan a stay to check them out.

On the North Fork, Windmill House on Sound Avenue in Baiting Hollow is a great photo stop.
