Brigham Young is Utah's most prominent historical figure because he led the mass migration of Mormon pioneers to the Salt Lake Valley and established the foundational religious, political, and economic systems that shaped the entire Intermountain West.

Often called the "American Moses"
Following the assassination of Joseph Smith in 1844, Young led thousands of religious refugees across the Great Plains to the Great Salt Lake Valley in 1847 to escape persecution.

He designed and oversaw the establishment of Salt Lake City and over 200 other towns and cities across Utah, Nevada, Idaho, Arizona, and Wyoming.

As the first governor of the Utah Territory (appointed by President Millard Fillmore in 1850), he organized irrigation networks, founded the territory's first major industries, and championed self-sufficiency.

He established the learning institutions that eventually became the University of Utah and Brigham Young University.

Young’s leadership is also heavily defined by controversy. His public embrace of plural marriage (polygamy), his enforcement of church authority, and his rhetoric surrounding federal authority led to intense conflicts with the U.S. government—most notably the Utah War and the Mountain Meadows Massacre.
