Terry: Overtaxing struggling restaurants hurts all of us

Have you been out to your favorite restaurant lately? Do you go there as often as you used to? Did you notice that there were fewer people there the last time that you went? The operators of your favorite restaurant have certainly noticed. Restaurants across the commonwealth are facing a critical moment. Cost increases for restaurants combined with economically exhausted consumers have put the squeeze on Virginia’s hospitality sector. Making matters worse — we’ve seen more and more Virginia localities turn to increased prepared food taxes, commonly called “meals taxes,” that cost customers and restaurants alike.

Restaurants are getting grilled by the proposed City Meals Tax increase. Tell City Council to oppose it, and find an alternative solution.

The meals tax would be 7% with the proposed change, which is expected to bring in an extra $6 million in revenue to address some of the city’s most pressing needs, City Manager Valmarie Turner said.

We used to have a Moonshine tour and Twin Creeks Distillery was always our favorite!

This Women's History Month, we're celebrating Anna Prillaman Robertson, a family owner at Twin Creeks Distillery, who carries on a family legacy steeped in tradition and resilience. 🥃

We asked her about her remarkable journey and what fuels her passion. Here's what she had to say:

❓What inspired you to pursue a career in distilling/the spirits industry❓
"My roots are embedded in the old-time ways of mashing grains and fruits, and making craft spirits. My family culture is centered around string music, the art of mountain distilling, and southern hospitality. I come from a family who have been very involved in the liquor business, mostly illegally during war times and depression times in the 1930s. Both of my grandfathers were even involved, indicted, and noted as 'kingpins' during the 'Great Moonshine Conspiracy Trial of 1935' in Franklin County, Virginia. My inspiration comes from the hard lifestyle of the most genuine folks I ever knew. The truth behind our local area's spirit history needed to be preserved and shared. That's why I'm here in the distilling and spirits industry."

❓What advice would you give a woman who is interested in breaking into the spirits industry❓
"Stay consistent. Start with purpose and never forget that purpose. Stay in touch with like-minded and fellow distillery ladies. Let passion for your craft fuel your fire, not money. It will follow."
