Great seeing my old pal Fresh Ground at Fontana for a sunrise breakfast a couple days ago. I always look forward to catching up when he is in the area. For non hikers that follow my page, he hits the trail heads and feeds hikers......for free! He is a legend on the AT and one of the nicest people you will ever meet. Even a broken arm and a pinched nerve won't stop him.

2024 was an interesting one at The Cabins in the Woods. Vacation rentals have been down significantly since 2022, as is hiker traffic. I attributed this to inflation-and (at least in Graham County) an increase in cabin inventory. Lots of new places popping up, but less people for more cabins means tougher times for established businesses. Hurricane Helene-which had a near zero effect here as far as damage, still had an economic impact as misinformation regarding road closures and damage were reported for all of Western NC without detail. This scared vacationers and hikers away during our busiest month-October and bled into November. While grants have been expanded to Graham County-they exclude short term rentals. Still, we were lucky compared to our friends to the East. The ATC estimates yet another decrease this year and based on our 1st 2 months, they are correct......down 65% here compared to last year. We are optimistic things will return to normal. Hikers looking for rides or lodging should reach out a couple days in advance as we've had to make some adjustments to availability. Vacationers-bring it on......we are open and ready in our little slice of heaven.

We are blessed to have been spared from the devastation around us. This morning, our cell service and internet connections were restored. We expect to see many cancellations as even though our area is in good shape, getting here, finding gas along the way, and securing food will be affected. Surrounding us in Graham County, it appears that most businesses are making due, but will also struggle with stocking levels for the time being. So-stock up on food before and if you come. The forests are "closed" for assessment for the time being, but we expect news soon. If you are traveling from the West or South, you will be able to get here through Knoxville Atlanta, and Columbia as usual, The roads from Asheville to here are clear, but Asheville itself was hit hard. They are blocking entry from most main roads heading West from I-77. We recommend you check to insure your activities planned are possible and feel free to contact us for information. From the Northeast, there will be challenges. I fear that Interstate 40 on that side of the Smokies will take many, many months-if not a year to re-open. If you are inclined we ask you to keep the folks in the affected areas in your thoughts and prayers as many lives were lost and whole communities have been wiped out-some still awaiting relief with recovery efforts ongoing.
