Graham County Travel and Tourism is your Western North Carolina Smoky Mountain Travel Guide with accommodation listings, local event calendar, and area information. Graham County, North Carolina offers a variety of Smoky Mountain adventures and is becoming better known every year. With a natural beauty still unspoiled by crowds, it is truly a rare find in todayโ€™s world. It is the home of Joyce Kil

mer Memorial Forest, Slickrock Creek Wilderness Area, the Nantahala National Forest, and borders the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Appalachian Trail winds through the county on its trek from Georgia to Maine. Lake Santeetlahโ€™s shoreline is more than 75% National Forest; insurance that it will never be spoiled by development. Many visitors enjoy the solitude of the lake even on the busiest of summer weekends. Fontana Lake has some 25 miles of water to explore. The entire north shore is the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. Fontana Dam is a must see for the vacationer. And there are still two other rarely visited lakes to explore. Some of our trout streams boast a national reputation. The Cheoah River has first class rapids for the white water enthusiast. Tsali Recreational Area attracts both mountain bikers and horseback riders. The county has three of the best motorcycle/sports car roads in America. The Tail of the Dragon will challenge even the best riders/drivers with its 318 curves in 11 miles. The 50 mile-long Cherohala Skyway is tamer, but offers unsurpassed views of Joyce Kilmer and the Cherokee National Forest. Moonshiner 28 might bring-up an image of the old rum-runners of the past. And there are hundreds of miles of other great roads to explore in every direction. Want to get in the woods? Forest Service roads lead to some of the most remote places in the Appalachians where you can have a mountaintop or a waterfall to yourself for an afternoon.

We do not live โ€” you do not visit โ€” a dot on a map. We are not shaped by imaginary lines โ€” we are shaped by place.

This place, Cheoah โ€” the birthplace of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, is defined by a living culture and history that we all walk through together. The ground we till, the roads we drive, the trails we hike, the giant trees we stand beneath, the waterfalls we stand in awe of, even this particular window into the night sky form our daily experience.

To those that live here every day as well as to those fortunate enough that this place remains for you to visit and enjoy โ€” take the time to look and learn and then allow that knowledge to change how you walk, live and visit in this place.

We encourage everyone as you are walking the greenway around the high school to take a moment by the cane patch to see this generational event. Stop and read the interpretive signage along the path โ€” and teach your children.

Festival season on the Secret Side of the Smokies runs from May through October, and the 2026 calendar is full โ€” bookmark this post so you donโ€™t miss a date!

On Friday nights, Dancing on the Square livens up the Robbinsville Courthouse Square. On Saturday nights, Stecoah hosts An Appalachian Evening in the historic Lynn L. Shields auditorium, a concert series that has featured traditional and contemporary mountain music for decades.

We celebrate four special milestones this year. The Stecoah Schoolhouse turns 100 โ€” itโ€™s been a full century since the little rock schoolhouse first opened its doors. Fading Voices Demonstration Day marks its 40th Anniversary of preserving the traditional ways of the Snowbird Cherokee. Graham County Heritage Festival hosts a special America 250th celebration over the Fourth of July weekend. And last but not least โ€” the popular Dragon Hill Climb event celebrates its 20th race up to Maple Springs Overlook.
