Rochester By Water

Rochester By Water The Corn Hill Waterfront and Navigation Foundation is a non-profit organization that runs Sam Patch and Riverie tour boats.

Founded in 1991 as Corn Hill Waterfront & Navigation Foundation, Rochester By Water is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping people see Rochester from a different perspective — from the water on tour boats Riverie and Sam Patch. They aim to connect the local community and tourists to the historic waterways in Rochester through authentic guided boat experiences and educational programs.

Long before today’s recreational cruises, the Erie Canal was a lifeline of movement, connection, and opportunity across New York State.

During the years leading up to emancipation, canal towns like Rochester became important centers for abolitionist activity and the fight for freedom. The canal corridor helped connect communities, spread ideas through travel and commerce, and brought influential voices like Frederick Douglass to Rochester, where he published *The North Star* and advocated for justice and equality.

This Juneteenth, we reflect on the stories carried along these waterways—not just of trade and transportation, but of courage, resistance, and the pursuit of freedom.

As we continue to share the history of the Erie Canal, we honor those whose voices and actions helped move our nation forward.

Today we celebrate Flag Day and begin honoring America’s Semiquincentennial — the 250th birthday of the United States.

For generations, the American flag has flown over the waterways that helped shape our nation’s history, including the Erie Canal right here in Rochester. From commerce and travel to connection and community, these waterways played an important role in America’s growth and continue to tell the story of our shared history.

As we approach America 250, we’re proud to celebrate the people, places, and waterways that helped build our nation.

Happy Flag Day from all of us at Rochester By Water!
