Something to consider....
Selling girl scout cookies is tough.
I remember standing outside grocery stores being rejected over and over and over again. The rude people who would blurt "NO!" without you even saying anything to them.
Or the people who simply pretended you didn't exist, deliberately looking away the entire time.
Do you know how much impact that negative behavior has on a 7, 9, 10, 12 year old girl?
I was a girl scout when I was in early grade school and I made a promise right then that I would never be one of those rude adults.
Every time I see girl scouts selling cookies I look at them directly, I smile and say "Hi!". And either I buy a box, or I don't. When I don't buy a box, I tell them I already bought from another troop but "hang in thee, I know how hard it is to do this- don't let all the negative people get you down." Then I tell them about the promise that I made to myself and that always seems to make them smile. And the moms and older girls are so appreciative of the conversation.
It takes less than 1-2 minutes of my time and I hope that my cheeriness and friendliness will wipe out some of the negativity that they encountered the other 90% of the time.
Please please please- if you don't want to support the girl scouts or buy a box of cookies, at least LOOK at them and treat them with kindness and respect. SAY hello and SAY no thank you. Don't be rude, don't ignore them. Be polite, be courteous, be friendly, make them feel good about themselves. It's hard enough to be a kid these days- more so than when we were kids.
