The Big Tree in Rockport-Fulton stands as one of the most significant live oaks in the United States. The Big Tree, named Texas State Champion Virginia Live Oak in 1969, has been growing for over 1,000 years and measures 35 feet in circumference with a 90-foot crown spread.

The constant coastal breeze limits the height of the Big Tree, but when factoring in the girth, this tree is the second-largest live oak in Texas.

Located on the Lamar Peninsula, the tree is just a short drive from town, across the Copano Bay Causeway. This historic tree has survived droughts, fires, and dozens of major hurricanes, including Hurricane Harvey in 2017. The Big Tree is a charter member of the Live Oak Society and was once featured in Ripley's Believe It or Not.

When visiting Rockport-Fulton, The Big Tree is a must-see attraction that's free to visit. The site includes a small park with benches where visitors can appreciate this remarkable specimen up close.

Nostalgic postcard of Rockport!

This location has been the site of many enjoyable experiences for us. The attached postcard, sent in 1963, depicts the greatly missed Surfside Motel which was destroyed during Hurricane Harvey. You can see the initial development of Key Allegro Island, observable in the background.
