End of May report

Flounder gigging has been good over the last month. We have been limiting on flounder most nights, but not every night. Recent trips in the last week have been faster, as we are finally getting into a summer pattern, and fish are getting easier to find. Still lots of big flounder showing up this year, and we are seeing a handful of fish in the 20” range each week. With lots of rain this past week, the bay is looking really healthy going into Summer, and I expect gigging to stay consistently good through June and July.

Mid-April report

Flounder gigging has been good over the last 2 weeks, but boy have we been working hard to find fish with persistent high winds and high tide levels. Some nights have been fast action, but most nights are taking 4-5 hours and grinding the limited clear water available in high winds. Lots of small flounder out there that should be keeper size in the next couple months. We are also getting a good number of fish this week in the 19-21” range, that are returning from the Gulf. Fishing should improve as we enter a more stable summer pattern in the next month.

End of March report

The last 10 nights of flounder gigging have been good. Limits on some nights, and ending up 3-4 fish short on other nights. Fishing got a little tougher for a few days, with nagging low tides. Tides are now back to normal, and the fishing really picked up over the last 4 nights. Fish size has been normal for March, with most fish in the 15-17” range.

April is always a solid month for flounder, and the gigging should be excellent as long as tides stay normal.

Flounder gigging has remained good over the last 10 nights. We are sticking limits of nice size flounder on most trips. When the weather got bad for a couple nights, we had to scratch out what we could with limited protected water available.

The weather pattern finally looks favorable over the next 2 weeks, so I expect good gigging results to close out March.

The last 4 nights of flounder gigging have been very good, with flounder limits on every trip. We had a couple nights with fast limits, and a couple trips where we had to work hard and move around a bunch to find them. The best fishing this week was when the weather got windy, finding more active feeding fish.

Plenty of open dates for March, including this week and next week during Spring Break.

The past week of flounder gigging has been awesome. Fast limits of flounder on the nights with nice weather, and working harder to find them when the weather got bad. The flounder are really showing up now that we had a sustained warm-up combined with higher tide levels. Fish size is really good for February, mostly 15-16” fish, with a few in the 17-19” range each night.

Spring break is only a few weeks away, and there are still dates available. Flounder action should remain good, with numbers building through the Spring months. Water clarity is as good as it gets right now, making it super easy for beginners to get on the fish.

The last 2 weeks of gigging have been good, with plenty of flounder on the warmer nights, and more black drum and sheepshead when weather was colder.

Flounder this time of year are much harder to find/pattern, and I have been putting in the work to stay on them. Flounder have been grouped up tight when we find them, making for some fast action and quick trips. Other nights it’s been a slow grind, getting 2-3 flounder per hour. When the weather is colder, black drum and sheepshead have been easy targets and lots of fun when the flounder don’t show up.

The current cold snap will likely mean more drum and sheepshead trips in the short-term, with flounder action gettng better once we see a sustained warm-up.

We had another excellent trip tonight gigging black drum and sheepshead, with full limits of both. My customers tonight wanted to target drum and sheepshead, so we didn’t spend much time looking for flounder. The flounder should start showing back up in reliable numbers the next few days, as we get warmer weather and higher tide levels.

With a big cold front and freeze coming this weekend, now is the time to get on the fish before the cold-snap. I still have a couple open dates this week, and weather looks great for mix-bag trips for flounder, drum, and sheepshead. Please call me ASAP if you want to book.

25” flounder that weighed 7 pounds tonight. Flounder gigging was hot the last couple nights. The big fish are just about gone for winter, but we are getting a few of the stragglers of the run.
