These longtime customers had a blast tonight, with a quick 10 flounder limit. We also got the largest flounder so far this year, a fat 23” fish. I still have this Sunday 4/20 available, and weather looks nice that night.

Lots of fun tonight with these guys, and another fast limit of solid flounder. 20 flounder limit by 11pm, largest was 19” and lots of 16-18” fish. Wind was gusty at 15-20mph and extreme low tide. Call me and let’s get on the fish!

Mid-March report

The last two weeks of flounder gigging in Rockport have been good. The first week of March was awesome, with fast limits nearly every night under favorable weather conditions. The past week was more hit-or-miss, with extreme low tides and high winds. Some nights were easy limits in under 2 hours, and others we had to grind late into the night for 5-10 fish. The flounder are definitely there, but adverse conditions have made it really tough lately.

We are currently in a vicious low tide/high wind/dry weather pattern. Once we break out of it, gigging should get much better, and the long range forecast looks like that might happen later this week.

I still have plenty of open dates coming up, even 3 Saturdays in April still available. April is my favorite month of the year for gigging, with clear water, plenty of fish, and warmer weather.

TowBoat US Corpus Christi & Port Aransas is awesome. I had a major problem with the outboard on my trip last night, and Chris Cummins went above and beyond to get me back going again.

He ran the tow boat from cove harbor to goose island to pickup the parts/tools I needed, and then brought them out to me. He stood by while I made repairs to the motor and made sure we were safe before he left. All this in the middle of the night, and response time was under 1 hour. If you don’t have a membership with them already, you better get one, worth every penny.

COLD, Windy, and low tides tonight. Tide was running out so fast it was hard to gig in most spots. Temps were in the mid 40’s with 15mph winds, making it challenging to find good water clarity.

We ended with a nice box of fish, but customers begged to come in around 11pm, they were frozen!

It doesn’t happen very often, but things lined up perfectly for these new customers on tonight’s trip. Winds, water temps, and tide levels all came together tonight, making for ideal gigging. We limited out on flounder, sheepshead, and black drum, all before 10pm. We ended with a super rare 30 fish “trifecta” for 2 people.

Flounder numbers are starting to look way better in the last few days, and steady flounder action should become the norm over the next few weeks.

Changing tactics with tides and temps:

On Friday night we had slightly low tides and warmer water temps. I decided to focus on flounder, with prime ground right on the shoreline easily accessible. We ended with 17 nice flounder from 15-19” by 11pm. Most of the fish were in the 16-18” range, really big for this time of year.

Saturday night brought much lower tides and colder water temps, which usually scatters the flounder. I took the mix bag approach, starting with some flounder spots and finishing with solid drum and sheepshead action. We ended with 5 flounder, 4 sheepshead, and 20 drum limit by 11pm.

With changing conditions daily, I always have a plan to make your trip memorable. I have plenty of open dates this Spring, and things are looking good no matter the weather or tides.

Found a few jumbo sheepshead tonight in the fog, rain, and 15mph NE wind. Largest sheepshead was 23” and almost 10 pounds. Drum were everywhere, but big sheepshead is what these guys were looking for.

I’m looking forward to warmer weather next week, and changing back to gigging flounder on the flats if water warms up enough.

Just a sneak peek at what’s coming up…

I did a quick trip with MulletMan tonight, shooting a new video for his YouTube channel. We decided to do something different than the normal flounder videos of the past. Got a 15 black drum limit and 9 sheepshead in 2 hours.

Video should be up in a few days, I will post it here when it’s ready. In the meantime, call and book a trip while the fishing is hot!
