Sarajevo's history begins in the 15th century as a key city in the Ottoman Empire, flourishing as a diverse center of commerce and culture with mosques, synagogues, and churches coexisting. In 1878, it came under Austro-Hungarian rule, which brought modernization but also rising tensions that culminated in the 1914 assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the event that triggered World War I. After the war, Sarajevo was part of Yugoslavia, and it enjoyed a period of growth, including hosting the 1984 Winter Olympics. The city's most recent and tragic chapter was the Siege of Sarajevo from 1992 to 1996 during the Bosnian War, the longest siege of a capital city in modern history. Since the war's end, Sarajevo has been a city of recovery and reconstruction, blending its rich past with a modern identity shaped by resilience.
