🌊☀️ Some fun history about our area of the island! 🦀
Did you know Rodanthe was once known as “Chicamacomico”? This little stretch of paradise played an important role in Outer Banks history — home to one of the first U.S. Life-Saving Stations, which later became part of the Coast Guard! 🚤
It’s wild to think about the generations who’ve lived, worked, and rescued sailors along the same stretch of sand we now enjoy for sunsets and surf. 🌅

🏝️ OBX Town History: Rodanthe 🏝️
What we know today as Rodanthe, NC, was once called Chicamacomico—an Algonquin word believed to mean “sinking down sand.” Native Americans gave the area its name, and early English settlers carried it on, though often with their own variations like Chickony-Commock or simply Chick. 🌾
By the mid-to-late 1700s, English settlers had established roots here, and by the 1800s, the northern end of Hatteras Island—known as the Chicamacomico Banks—was home to distinct settlements. At that time, present-day Rodanthe and Waves were considered one community, all under the name Chicamacomico. ⚓
In 1874, the area became home to a U.S. Life-Saving Station, which proudly carried the Chicamacomico name. But that same year, when the first post office opened, it was named Rodanthe—likely because “Chicamacomico” was too tricky for mail service records. Where the name Rodanthe originated, however, remains a bit of a mystery. 📬
This led to the split: North Rodanthe (which kept the Rodanthe name) and South Rodanthe (later renamed Waves). 🌊
History buffs may also find it fascinating that until the mid-1600s, a prominent cape once jutted out here, called Cape Kenrick. Though it eroded away, its remains still shape the coast as Wimble Shoals, a reminder of how shifting sands and winds continually reshape this fragile barrier island. 🌀
🌅 Today, Rodanthe stands as a living piece of Outer Banks history, its story woven by Native Americans, settlers, shipwrecks, and the ever-changing shoreline.
