Thinking about an Alaska cruise? Here’s something most people don’t realize until they start planning:

Choosing the right cruise line matters — a lot.

Not every cruise line has access to the same places in Alaska, and if Glacier Bay National Park is on your bucket list, you’ll want to make sure your itinerary actually takes you there. Cruise lines such as Princess, Holland America and Norwegian offer Glacier Bay itineraries, while many other popular cruise lines do not.

And Glacier Bay is just one piece of the puzzle. The ship you choose, the ports you visit, how much time you have in each port, where you sail from, and whether you add time on land can completely change your Alaska experience.

This is exactly why I don’t believe in simply finding a cruise and clicking “book.”

For a bucket-list trip like Alaska, the details matter.

There’s a big difference between booking a trip and planning one well.

A resort can have thousands of five-star reviews and still be completely wrong for you. The cheapest room category isn’t always the best value. Two resorts sitting on the same stretch of beach can offer completely different experiences. And sometimes changing your dates by a day or two can make a pretty significant difference in the overall trip.

That’s the part of travel planning I love.

And I’m picky about recommendations.

I want to know what the beach is actually like. Whether the “ocean view” room is worth the upgrade. If the resort is great for couples but boring for a group of friends. If there’s enough for kids to do. Whether you’ll need dinner reservations. How far the airport transfer is. What’s worth paying extra for—and what isn’t.

Because a vacation is too expensive to choose based on a few pretty pictures online.

If a great water park is high on your family’s vacation wish list, Mexico has some REALLY good options — but they’re definitely not all the same.

This list includes several resorts I recommend looking at when I have families who want more than just a pool and beach. A few things I’d consider before choosing:

Nickelodeon Riviera Maya — Probably the biggest “wow” factor for younger kids. Aqua Nick is huge, and the whole resort is built around families. This is one I’d choose when the water park itself is a major part of the vacation.

Moon Palace The Grand — Great for families who want a lot to do beyond the water park. It’s a massive resort with tons of restaurants, pools and activities. The tradeoff? I wouldn’t choose it specifically for the beach.

Royalton Splash Riviera Cancun — A good one to compare when you want a substantial water park without jumping into some of the higher price points on this list.

Hard Rock Riviera Maya — Great for active families, especially with older kids. There’s plenty happening around the resort in addition to the water park.

Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo/Maya — One I think gets overlooked. Lots for families to do, a beautiful resort complex and a good mix of water features, pools and beach.

Dreams Natura — Compact enough that you’re not spending your whole vacation walking across a giant resort. Good water features and family activities, although the beach would not be my main reason for choosing it.

Dreams Playa Mujeres — One of my favorites on this list when you want a better balance of water park + beautiful resort + good beach. It also works really well for multigenerational families.

Sandos Caracol — Completely different feel from most resorts. Lots of nature, wildlife and activities in addition to the water park. I’d recommend it more for the experience than for someone wanting a luxury resort.

Planet Hollywood Cancun — Lots going on and a fun choice for families who like a lively resort with plenty of entertainment.

Riu Dunamar — Worth considering if budget is important but the kids still want slides and plenty to do.

And this is exactly why I don’t like choosing a resort based on a “Top 10” list alone.

The best resort on this graphic for one family could be completely wrong for another. I look at the kids’ ages, budget, beach quality, food, room setup, resort size, activities, airport transfer and what your family actually wants to DO on vacation.

Flights are about to start opening up for Summer 2027! ✈️

So the big question is… where do you want to go?

If you’re already dreaming about next summer, here are a few ideas to get you thinking:

🌴 Mexico or the Caribbean – An all-inclusive resort where everything is taken care of and your biggest decision is pool or beach.

🚢 Caribbean Cruise – Visit several islands in one trip with plenty to do onboard along the way.

🏔️ Alaska Cruise + Land Tour – Cruise past glaciers, look for whales and wildlife, then add a few days exploring Alaska on land.

🌺 Hawaii – Spend a week on one island or make it an island-hopping trip with beaches, waterfalls, volcanoes and incredible scenery.

🇨🇷 Costa Rica – Rainforests, waterfalls, wildlife, hot springs, beaches and adventure all in one vacation.

🇬🇷 Greece – Start in Athens and then head to the islands. Santorini, Crete, Naxos, Paros… there are so many ways to build this trip.

🇮🇹 Italy – Rome, Florence and the Amalfi Coast… or slow things down with Tuscany and the Italian countryside.

🇬🇧🇫🇷 London + Paris – Two completely different cities connected by a quick train ride. This is a great first trip to Europe!

🏰 Ireland + Scotland – Castles, dramatic coastlines, little villages, scenic drives and some absolutely incredible countryside.

🏔️ Canadian Rockies – Banff, Lake Louise and Jasper for turquoise lakes, mountains, wildlife and some of the prettiest scenery in North America.

🌊 Portugal – Lisbon, Porto and the Algarve for beautiful beaches, coastal towns, great food and a European trip that’s a little different from the usual.

🦥 Belize – Split your vacation between the jungle and the Caribbean. Explore Mayan ruins and caves for a few days, then finish your trip on the beach.

And if you really want to do something BIG…

🌍 African Safari + Zanzibar – A bucket-list safari followed by a few days relaxing on the beaches of Zanzibar.

Summer 2027 may sound far away, but it’s going to be here before we know it!

Next time you’re booking a Caribbean vacation, don’t automatically choose the standard room… consider a SWIM-OUT! 🌴

If you’ve never stayed in one, a swim-out room gives you direct access to a pool right from your patio or terrace. No packing up a pool bag, hunting for chairs, or making 47 trips back to the room because someone forgot something. 😂

Why I love swim-outs:
• Step right out of your room and into the water
• Grab a drink or snack from your room whenever you want
• Enjoy the pool without having to claim a chair for the day
• They can be AMAZING for families — depending on the resort and room setup
• Mom and Dad can relax on the patio while the kids play right outside

A few things to consider:
• Swim-outs aren’t always completely private — some connect to a larger pool shared with other rooms
• They can cost more than a standard room
• With little ones, you’ll want to think about having water directly outside your door and choose a setup you’re comfortable with

And then there’s another option I LOVE… a private pool room.

Instead of sharing the water with neighboring rooms, you have your own pool right outside your room. These can be SO worth it, especially for families. Chill at your room, order room service, enjoy a drink on the patio, and let the kids swim without spending the entire day at the main pool.

Not every resort’s “swim-out” or “private pool” room is created equal, though. Some are incredible…and some aren’t worth the upgrade.

That’s one of the things I look at when helping my clients choose a resort. Sometimes spending a little more on the right room category can completely change the vacation.
