Nature is giving us the first hints of a changing season in Roseau. Fresh green pinecones are beginning to mature, while last season's cones are dropping to the forest floor. It's one of those little signs that summer is slowly making way for fall in northern Minnesota. Soon our trails and backroads will trade summer greens for brilliant golds and oranges. There is something special about slowing down and noticing the seasons change one pinecone at a time.

Come visit us. Get outside. Take the trail. Breathe in the pine. Fall is on its way to Roseau.

Tiny Ecosystems and Lichen Fun Facts Found in Roseau
While hiking southeast of Roseau, two U of MN Botany undergrads discovered this rock that sparked curiosity. Based on the different colors, textures, and circular colonies of lichen found on this boulder, this rock may have been sitting here a long time. Being round in shape, it could have been transported and deposited by glacial ice. Minnesota's Minnesota Biodiversity Atlas lists 795 taxa in its lichen key. Lichens are often associated with clean air because they obtain much of what they need directly from the atmosphere, and many species are sensitive to pollutants; it's safe to say the clean air here supports good lichen diversity.
