Here's the thing about this walk — none of this was built for tourists.
Chelsea Market, where you'll stop for lunch? That was a biscuit factory. The Oreo was invented in that building in 1912.
Then you go up the stairs and you're on the High Line. This used to be a freight railway. The last train ran in 1980, carrying three carloads of frozen turkeys.
And that iron arch you walk through into Little Island? That's the old Cunard gate. Titanic survivors came ashore right there.
An hour if you keep walking. Longer if you don't.

That walkway you're standing on gets taken apart every autumn. Board by board, nail by nail.
It has to come off before the ice does. Ice comes over the falls, lands on the deck, and the weight of it would take the whole thing down.
So every spring a crew builds it again from scratch. Which means the deck you walk on this year isn't the one that was here last year.
It goes up in May, comes down in October, and that leaves you September.

The first Liberty Bell cracked the first time they rang it. That's still the thing everybody comes to see.
Right behind it is Independence Hall — the Declaration was signed there in 1776, and eleven years later they came back to the same room and wrote the Constitution.
Out on the lawn there's a stone with the First Amendment carved into it. Forty-five words, and that's the whole thing.
And then you turn the corner, and there's a giant yellow YO. That's Philadelphia.

Three memorials on the National Mall, and there's an order that actually works.

Lincoln first. That statue was meant to be ten feet — half what you see now. They doubled it because anything smaller got swallowed by the room.

Then Jefferson, across the water. When it opened in 1943, that statue was plaster — metal was rationed for the war.

The Washington Monument last. Look about a third of the way up and the colour of the stone changes. They ran out of money and stopped for more than twenty years, and by the time they started again the original quarry was gone.

Here's what's included on our two-day Niagara tour out of New York.

The Vessel sits in the public square at Hudson Yards, on Manhattan's West Side. It's 154 interconnecting flights of stairs — about 2,500 steps across 16 storeys, 150 feet high — and it has no interior at all. There are no rooms and no roof. The whole structure is the staircase.

It wasn't built on site in the usual sense. The steel was fabricated in Italy, shipped across the Atlantic in six separate deliveries, brought through Port Newark and barged up the Hudson, then assembled on the plaza. The cladding is polished stainless steel finished to look like copper, which is why it reads a different colour depending on where you stand. Designed by Heatherwick Studio; it opened in 2019 at a reported cost of around $200 million.

It's an easy stop for a group with a wide age range, because the whole thing works from the ground — you see the full shape from the plaza, there's nothing to queue for, and there's seating and shade nearby.

Hudson Yards is also the north end of the High Line, so this and the walkway are one stop, not two. Our New York day tour links them.

The High Line runs a mile and a half along Manhattan's West Side, three storeys up on a freight railway that carried meat and produce into the city from 1934 until the trains stopped in 1980. It sat abandoned for nearly twenty years and was close to demolition before neighbourhood residents organised to save it. It reopened as a public park in 2009, and the planting is modelled on what had grown back on the tracks by itself.

It works well for a group with a wide age range. It's free, it opens at 7am, and once you're up the walkway is flat for most of its length — though there are short flights of steps at a few of the seating areas. Only four entrances have a lift, so if anyone can't manage stairs it's worth checking which one before you set off. There are three restrooms on the whole line: Gansevoort Street, 16th Street and 30th Street. No bikes and no dogs, service animals excepted.

Everyone wants this photo of the Manhattan skyline. Almost nobody takes it from Manhattan.

This is Hamilton Park in Weehawken, New Jersey — a small park on top of the cliff, sitting directly across from Midtown. About twenty minutes out of Midtown by car.

Being up on the cliff is what makes it work. From down at the water the buildings stack on top of each other. From up here the whole skyline lines up in one frame — downtown at one end, uptown at the other. And the river holds all of it, so every window on that skyline is down there twice.

It's an easy stop to add if you're already doing a New York trip. No stairs, no climbing — you park, you walk up, and it's right in front of you.

Chelsea Market sits inside the old Nabisco factory — the Oreo was invented in this building in 1912, and Ninth Avenue outside is still signed Oreo Way. The concourse opens at 7am, which is the only reliable way to get a seat.
It's an easy stop for a mixed-age group: everyone picks their own food, there's no menu to agree on, and nobody has to walk far. When you're done, the Tenth Avenue end takes you straight onto the High Line.
