Big changes coming to Sac airport!

2026 is a big year at SMF ✈️

As our region grows, so does the need for an airport that’s easier to navigate, more comfortable, and built for the future. Through SMForward, our long-term improvement program, several major projects will reach important milestones in 2026, while others officially break ground and move into their next phase.

Here’s what’s ahead and when you can expect to see it completed:

🚶‍♂️ New Pedestrian Walkway
Expected to open Summer 2026
This elevated, ADA-accessible walkway will connect Terminal B to Concourse B and include moving sidewalks, escalators, and elevators. It provides travelers with more options, improves accessibility, and reduces reliance on the tram.

🅿️ New Parking Garage
Expected to open late 2026
A new parking garage west of Terminal B will add 5,500 parking spaces, helping ease congestion and make parking more convenient for passengers and visitors.

🚗 New Terminal A Exit Road
Expected to open in 2027
This new exit road is designed to improve traffic flow around Terminal A and create smoother, safer arrivals and departures.

✈️ Concourse B Expansion
Construction begins in 2026
This major expansion will add new gates and additional space to support future air service growth. While construction starts in 2026, this is a multi-year project designed to meet long-term demand.

🛄 Baggage Handling Improvements
Ongoing investment beginning in 2026
SMF is making necessary investments in baggage handling systems across both terminals to support reliability, maintenance, and long-term operations. This work will occur in phases as part of our broader effort to keep airport systems running safely and efficiently.

These projects represent SMForward, but they’re not the only improvements happening across the airport. Many additional projects are underway to enhance safety, operations, and the overall passenger experience.

This is about more than construction. It’s about investing in an airport that works better for everyone who travels through SMF, today and for decades to come.

Consider this a not-so-subtle reminder to check your passport’s expiration date and start the renewal process (online or by mail) if needed.
