Rodeo cowboy “Dusky Deamon” Bill Pickett was born in Williamson County on December 5, 1870. After leaving school at a young age to work as a ranch hand, Pickett developed the technique of "bulldogging." This method involved biting a steer's lip and wrestling it to the ground, inspired by observing herding dogs.

Pickett and his brothers established the Pickett Brothers Bronco Busters and Rough Riders Association, showcasing their skills. In 1905, he joined the renowned 101 Ranch Wild West Show, becoming a star performer. Pickett's fame led to his appearance in early motion pictures, including the 1921 film "The Bull-Dogger."

In 1971, he became the first African American inducted into the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum’s Rodeo Hall of Fame. A Texas historical marker commemorating his life was dedicated in Taylor’s Heritage Square in 1992, and a prominent statue of Pickett stands at the Fort Worth Stockyards.

We've got a busy weekend coming up across the Republic of Texas Complex! Our friends at Barrington Plantation State Historic Site will be demonstrating period butchering and curing techniques throughout the weekend and just down the road in Anderson we'll be demonstrating period coffee roasting.

We'd encourage you to visit both sites if you can. You could start your day at Barrington and by the time the bacon is ready to be salted there will be a whole flight of period coffees ready at the inn or you could visit one tomorrow and one Sunday, either way you slice it, you are sure to discover a lot!
