🇷🇸 Novi Sad, Serbia: Charming Streets, Historic Churches & BBQ with a View

Our Avalon Waterways journey continued to Novi Sad, a charming city on the banks of the Danube known for its beautiful architecture, relaxed atmosphere, and rich history.

🚶‍♀️ City Tour – We explored the city center, starting at the main plaza, surrounded by elegant historic buildings, cafés, and lively streets. Visited some of Novi Sad’s beautiful churches, each with its own distinctive architecture and history.

🏰 Petrovaradin Fortress – this impressive fortress overlooking the Danube is known for its massive walls, tunnels, and spectacular views of Novi Sad and the river.

🍽️ Lunch with a View – returned to Avalon Passion for lunch on the Sky Deck. A delicious grilled BBQ was being served outdoors, and we had an incredible view of Petrovaradin Fortress across the Danube.

🇷🇸 A Day in Belgrade: History, Architecture & Afternoon Tea Aboard Avalon Passion

Our Avalon Waterways journey brought us to Belgrade, Serbia, a city where centuries of history meet a lively, modern atmosphere. Here are some of today's highlights:

⛪ Temple of Saint Sava – This enormous Orthodox church is one of Belgrade’s most recognizable landmarks and one of the largest Orthodox churches in the world. The interior is breathtaking, shimmering in gold and decorated with beautiful mosaics.

🚶‍♀️ Stari Grad (Old Town) – We took a walk through the historic heart of Belgrade, taking in the mix of old buildings, lively streets, shops, cafés, and everyday city life.

🏰 Belgrade Fortress – Sitting high above the meeting point of the Sava and Danube Rivers, the fortress has witnessed centuries of battles and changing empires. Walking around the old walls and looking out over the two rivers, it was easy to understand why this location was so strategically important.

☕️🫖 Afternoon Tea – Back onboard our ship, we enjoyed a wonderful selection of sandwiches, cakes, cheesecakes, and colorful macarons, along with tea and coffee. After a busy day exploring Belgrade, sitting down with a cup of tea and something sweet was such a lovely way to relax and enjoy the scenery from the ship.

This is one of the things I enjoy about river cruising—the day can be filled with history and sightseeing, but you can return to the ship and have time to slow down, enjoy good food, and simply relax.

Another memorable day along the Danube! ❤️

🏞️ Along the Danube: From Decebalus to Prehistoric Mysteries and a Medieval Fortress

⛰️ One of the most anticipated days of our Avalon Waterways Danube cruise was sailing through the Iron Gates, the spectacular gorge where the Danube winds between Romania and Serbia.
I've seen the Rock Sculpture of Decebalus so many times in travel brochures and in advertisements for Eastern European river cruises that seeing it in person was something I had been looking forward to for a long time.
Carved directly into the limestone cliff overlooking the Danube, the enormous face depicts Decebalus, the last king of Dacia, who fought against the Romans nearly 2,000 years ago. Seeing it from the river, with the cliffs and Danube surrounding it, this 40 meters high sculpture is quite impressive.

🏺 We then visited Lepenski Vir, one of the most fascinating prehistoric archaeological sites along the Danube. The settlement dates back thousands of years, and the remains give us a glimpse into the lives of some of Europe's earliest settled communities. What was unique were the humanoid fish sculptures. Their faces have human features but also a distinctly fish-like appearance, especially the wide mouths. No one knows exactly what they meant, but archaeologists believe they may have been connected to river gods or ancestors. Since the people of Lepenski Vir depended so heavily on the Danube and its fish for survival, it's easy to understand how important the river must have been to their beliefs and daily lives.

🏰 Later, we visited Golubac Fortress, positioned at the entrance to the Đerdap Gorge. With its stone towers and walls rising right beside the Danube, it looks like something straight out of a medieval movie. The fortress was built in a strategic location to control both the river and the land route through the region, and its setting is just as impressive as the fortress itself.

And one of the best parts? Our Avalon ship was waiting just a short walk away from the fortress! 🚢 No long bus ride back after sightseeing—just a leisurely stroll to the ship, where we could relax and continue our journey along the Danube.

This was one of those days that reminded me why I love river cruising. We could sail through an incredible natural landscape, step back thousands of years at a prehistoric site, explore a medieval fortress, and then simply walk back to our ship and continue sailing.

So many layers of history, all connected by the Danube❤️

🍳 One of my favorite parts of cruising on Avalon Passion? Breakfast!

Every morning, the buffet offered a great variety of choices. There were fresh fruits, several kinds of yogurt, cereals, cold cuts (including smoked salmon), honey straight from the honeycomb, and a great selection of fresh breads and pastries.

If you prefer a hot breakfast, there were bacon, sausage, hash browns, scrambled eggs, baked beans, grilled tomatoes, and more.

One thing I especially enjoyed was the egg station, where you could order an omelet with your favorite ingredients or have your eggs prepared just the way you like them. The breakfast menu also featured made-to-order classics like Eggs Benedict, poached eggs, and crispy Belgian waffles.
Along with coffee, tea, and juices, there was even sparkling wine 🥂 for anyone who wanted to start the morning with a little celebration.

With so many choices, breakfast was the perfect way to begin another day of exploring the beautiful towns and cities along the Danube.

🌻 Discovering Northwestern Bulgaria: A Charming Town, Ancient Fortress & Stunning Rock Formations

Our first stop was Vidin, a quiet riverside town. We had some free time to explore at our own pace, and for those who wanted a little more adventure, Avalon even offered complimentary bicycles right at the port.

🏰 Our next stop was Baba Vida Fortress, the best-preserved medieval fortress in Bulgaria. Located along the Danube, the fortress has stood for centuries and is remarkably well preserved. Walking through its stone walls, towers, and courtyards, it was easy to imagine what life was like during medieval times.

🌻 As we continued through the countryside, we passed endless sunflower fields in full bloom. Their bright golden blooms created a spectacular contrast against the blue summer sky.

🪨 We then arrived at the incredible Belogradchik Rocks, one of Bulgaria's most extraordinary natural wonders. Towering sandstone and limestone formations, sculpted by nature over millions of years, create a dramatic landscape unlike anywhere else. Many of the rocks resemble people, animals, and mythical figures.

🚢 💃 After a day of sightseeing, we returned to our Avalon ship for a delicious Sky Deck barbecue dinner. Enjoying freshly grilled food outdoors while cruising along the Danube was the perfect way to unwind. The evening ended with a lively Bulgarian folk dance performance, featuring colorful costumes, energetic music, and traditional dances that gave us a wonderful taste of Bulgaria's culture.

One of the reasons I love most about river cruising is how every day brings a completely different experience. One moment you're exploring medieval fortresses and spectacular natural landscapes, and by evening you're relaxing onboard with wonderful food, beautiful views, and authentic local entertainment, all without having to repack my suitcase!

🏰 Discovering Veliko Târnovo, Bulgaria's Historic Capital

Perched high above the winding Yantra River, Veliko Târnovo was once the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire. With its ancient stone houses clinging to the cliffs and its rich medieval history, it's one of Bulgaria's most picturesque cities.
Our day was filled with unforgettable experiences:

🍽️ Yantra Grand Hotel: had a traditional Bulgarian lunch while taking in spectacular views of the colorful hillside homes and the majestic Tsarevets Fortress overlooking the river.

🛍️ Samovodska Charshia: this charming artisan street is the heart of Veliko Târnovo's Old Town. Local craftsmen continue centuries-old traditions, creating beautiful handmade leather goods, icon paintings, pottery, woodcarvings, and dolls inspired by Bulgarian folklore.

🏰 Tsarevets Fortress: a walk through this impressive medieval stronghold led us to the Patriarchal Cathedral of the Holy Ascension of the Lord, where we were rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views of Veliko Târnovo and the Yantra River Valley.

🚢 Back onboard Avalon Passion: after an active day exploring Bulgaria, we returned to the ship for the complimentary Happy Hour cocktails, followed by another exceptional dinner. The evening ended on a festive note as we celebrated Canada Day with a special cake ! 🇨🇦🎂

Veliko Târnovo beautifully blends history, culture, and stunning scenery, making it one of the highlights of our Danube River cruise.

🏰 A Journey Through Historic Arbanassi

Arbanassi is one of Bulgaria's best-preserved historic villages and an architectural reserve, offering a glimpse into the country's rich history and traditions. Our visit highlights:

🏰 Kaloyan Castle: a rebuilt fortress that is as a hotel & restaurant, where we tasted the local Rakia, Bulgaria's famous fruit brandy & some local desserts.

⛪ Church of the Nativity: one of the most famous 17th-century Orthodox churches in this village, with very simple exterior but spectacular frescoes covering nearly every interior wall.

🌹 Local rose products shop: this region is world-famous for growing the Rosa damascene, used to produce the country's prized rose oil. Tried the rose liqueur & rose-flavored sweets.

🏡 Konstantsaliev House: the best-preserved example of Arbanassi's famous fortress-like merchant homes. During the 17th century, wealthy merchants transported valuable goods and money by caravan. To protect their families and merchandise, they built homes that looked like small fortresses.

Arbanassi is a charming destination where history, culture, and local traditions come together, making it a wonderful stop along the Danube.

🚢 Welcome Aboard! Embarking on Our Avalon Waterways Danube River Cruise

After an unforgettable journey through Romania, it was finally time to board our Avalon Waterways "12-Day The Danube from Romania to Budapest" river cruise and I couldn't wait to see what the next chapter of our adventure had in store!

From the moment we stepped onboard, we were warmly welcomed by the friendly crew, and it immediately felt like home. After settling into our Panorama Suite, I took some time to catch up on work while enjoying the beautiful river views. One of the things I appreciate most about river cruising is that it's easy to stay connected when needed, yet still have plenty of time to relax and enjoy the journey.

With unpacking finally behind us, I couldn't resist exploring the ship! From the inviting lounges and elegant public spaces to the open-air Sky Deck, every area was thoughtfully designed to make guests feel comfortable while taking in the ever-changing scenery along the Danube.

🍽 And then there was the food! Our first onboard meal was a wonderful introduction to Avalon’s culinary experience, featuring beautifully prepared dishes, fresh ingredients, and attentive service.

As a travel advisor, I always enjoy experiencing cruises firsthand. It allows me to better understand what my clients can expect—from the accommodations and dining to the overall atmosphere and service—so I can confidently recommend the experiences that best fit their travel style.
