Booking just a hotel? Here’s something most travelers don’t know: working with a travel advisor usually costs the same as booking it yourself online.

Same rate. Very different experience.

When I book your hotel, my industry partnerships often add things the booking sites can’t: room upgrades when available, daily breakfast, resort or spa credits, and priority for early check-in and late checkout.

You also get a human. If your flight cancels or the hotel oversells, you’re not on hold with a call center. You have someone who knows you, knows the property, and can fix it fast.

And because I know these hotels personally, I’ll tell you which room category is actually worth it and which building to request. The booking site definitely won’t.

A Tuscany trend I fully support: skipping the hotel and staying in an entirely restored borgo, a centuries-old hamlet brought back to life.

Borgo Pignano, near Volterra, is my favorite example. The estate covers 750 organic acres of classic Tuscan hills, and on clear days, you can spot the towers of San Gimignano from the gardens.

The detail everyone photographs: the swimming pool, carved into an ancient limestone quarry on the property. There’s a working artist residency with open studios, horseback rides through the hills, and a kitchen that bakes its bread with wheat grown right on the land.

It feels less like checking into a hotel and more like inheriting a Tuscan estate for the week.

What's the best way to see the Scottish Highlands? I'd argue it's from a five-star hotel that happens to move. You unpack once, and Scotland comes to you.

Belmond’s Royal Scotsman train winds past lochs, glens, and castle ruins, and the open-air deck at the back might just be the best seat in the country.

Onboard, it's tradition done right: long, formal dinners, a whisky ambassador talking you through tastings you'd never find on your own, and live music in the lounge car after dark.

The part nobody expects? The train has its own Dior Spa. You can book a treatment while the Highlands roll by your window.

What makes a safari feel truly private? Usually, the size of the lodge.

Monwana Game Lodge in South Africa’s Thornybush Private Game Reserve has just a handful of suites. Meals feel like a house party. And the guiding team learns exactly what you want to see.

Thornybush shares open borders with the Greater Kruger, so the Big Five move freely through the reserve, and private-reserve rules allow off-road tracking for closer sightings.

Lizard Island might ruin other beach vacations for you. Fair warning.

Set at the northernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef, it's reached by a scenic one-hour flight from Cairns. It's also the only resort on the island, with 24 powdery beaches shared among just 40 rooms.

My favorite experience here: snorkeling the Clam Gardens, home to giant clams over a century old, right off the resort's own beaches. The rest of the stay is just as easy, with an all-inclusive setup covering meals, drinks, and most activities, plus a hilltop spa with views straight out over the reef.

Divers, take note: the legendary Cod Hole, one of Australia's most famous dive sites, is just offshore.

What does a travel advisor actually do all day? More than most people would guess.

Before your trip is ever booked, I’m comparing properties I’ve personally visited, weighing which room categories are actually worth it, and checking with my hotel contacts about what’s new.

Once you say yes, the real work starts. Securing the right rooms. Arranging transfers, guides, and reservations. Adding perks and upgrades through my partnerships. Building a day-by-day flow that doesn’t exhaust you.

Northern lights from bed. No parka required.

Welcome to Arctic TreeHouse Hotel in Rovaniemi, Finland. The suites sit up on stilts among the pines, each with a huge glass wall facing due north, so on a clear winter night the aurora shows up while you're still under the covers.

And on the nights it doesn't show? You won't be disappointed. The suites are a destination on their own with warm wood, clean Scandinavian lines, and that giant window framing a snow globe forest.

Santa Claus Village is just minutes away, which makes a trip here with kids about as magical as travel gets.
