Kangerlussuaq Airport in Greenland has a terminal so small you can see the runway from the check-in desk. The entire walk from the front door to the boarding stairs is about 20 meters. You could do it in slippers.

The other extreme: some terminals at major global hubs span over a mile from end to end. The walking path at one major Asian airport, if laid in a straight line, would stretch longer than the runway you're about to take off from.

There's a moving walkway in a major American hub that takes nearly 5 minutes to ride from end to end. People sprint down it with their carry-ons. Nobody looks happy.

The lesson is not that big airports are bad. The lesson is that your departure gate matters almost as much as your destination. A 20-minute gate walk after a 12-hour flight is a different kind of endurance test.

If your layover in Istanbul is between 6 and 24 hours, the airport runs a free program called Touristanbul. They pick you up at the airport, drive you to the Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, the Grand Bazaar, feed you lunch, and bring you back in time for your connection. Cost: zero.

Singapore's Changi Airport offers a free Singapore tour for transit passengers with layovers over 5.5 hours. Two routes. River cruise or city sights. Guided. All free.

Doha has a similar program. So does Seoul. Taipei gives transit passengers a free half-day tour that includes a temple, a market, and tea.

You don't need a visa. You don't need to book a hotel. You just need a layover long enough to leave the terminal and come back.

We see people deliberately booking longer layovers through these cities just for the free tour. The flight costs the same either way. The tour costs nothing. That's the best kind of math.

There are festivals. And then there are festivals that have been happening for 16 centuries.

Meskel lands on September 27. The Ethiopian highlands in late September are green from the rainy season, the air is clean and thin, and the fire in Meskel Square is visible from the hills surrounding the capital.

We've booked this route. Addis Ababa is one of the most connected cities in Africa, and the flight is simpler than most people realize. A business class seat gets you there rested. The fire does the rest.

La Merce is Barcelona's biggest street festival, held every year around September 24. It's named after the city's patron saint, but the saint has very little to do with what actually happens.

Men and women climb on each other's shoulders to form castells , human towers that can reach 10 levels. Children, wearing helmets, scramble to the very top and raise a hand. The crowd goes silent. Then it erupts.

Elsewhere in the city: giants made of papier-mache parade through the streets. Fire-breathing dragons , literally, people in dragon costumes with flamethrowers , run through crowds in the Correfoc (fire run). Free concerts fill every plaza. And everything is free.

The entire city becomes a stage for four days. No tickets. No velvet ropes. Just Barcelona doing what Barcelona does best , being spectacular for no reason other than it can.
