Saint Augustine FL is 459 years old! This means many of the streets you will be walking on are just about that old as well. Maybe the surface isn't, like bricks, pavement etc, but those streets have been traveled since our original settlers in the 1500's. Especially if you are in the area of the original town plan in which streets panned out from the Plaza area.
Pictured is Aviles Street which got that name about one hundred years ago, named after the city that our founder was from: Aviles Spain.
Before that, it was called Hospital Street as the Spanish Military Hospital was located here.

When Martin Luther King Jr came to St Augustine in 1964, it was a pivotal time for the Civil Rights Movement. In fact, just a short time afterwards, the Civil Rights Act was adopted.
There was so much important activity as a matter of fact, that you can follow the Freedom Trail through town in the way of an audio tour! If you call the number in the brown part of the sign in the image here, you can begin a guided audio tour throughout St Augustine. You can walk it, ride it , drive it or just listen.
In the picture on this sign, Dr King sits next to Robert B Hayling, who was the main organizer of the movement in St Augustine. His home, also pictured here, is one of the stops on the tour (you can read about it's importance). He also has a park named after him that represents our freedoms in the civil rights movement called Freedom Park [also Robert B Hayling park] If you go south of Eddie Vickers Park, you will be on the trail to the park which comes complete with freedom chimes and blocks that are engraved with images drawn to represent civil freedom.
I encourage you to check both of these out! Something great to do on an afternoon in town.

NOW is the best time for viewing the lights in St Augustine if you prefer less crowds and calmer environment. The lights are the same as they have been all season but you can actually ride around town instead of being stopped in traffic.
So come join us for a ride and enjoy the view!! Fun for All!

PS, please watch the weather and bring a blanket and hot beverage if it seems to be brrr -we have had a rather chilly winter here.

Christmas is over. New Years is over. But Nights of Lights is still going strong!🌟 For two and a half more weeks you can enjoy the millions of beautiful twinkling lights in our iconic city. And now it can be a little more tranquil, as there will be less crowds, lighter traffic and easier parking.
