Tall Ship Tuesday The Schooner America is pictured below after winning the Royal Yacht Challenge Cup on Aug 22 1851, now called the "Americas Cup" Reportedly Queen Victoria asked "who is winning?" The reply; "Your Majesty, The America!" She then asked "who is second?" The reply; " Your Majesty there is no second!" That's how far ahead the Schooner America was and the rest is history! Not so fast; the Schooner America went on the serve several roles in her life after the famous race. She was private yacht and she trained our Military. An interesting fact for local lore is that she was acquired by the Confederates at the beginning of the Civil War and was later brought down to Jacksonville and then down the St John's River to Dunn's Creek south of Palatka where she was scuttled to keep out of Union hands. The scuttle attempt did not work the Union Navy raised her; refitted her and she became a Navy Training Vessel during and after the Civil War. She was used off and on up to WW2 where sadly the building's roof she was stored in collapsed during a snow storm and she was destroyed. There is a modern day replica of her in Key West, the America 2.0. Now you know the rest of the story!
