Every first Thursday in August, beer enthusiasts celebrate National IPA Day by going to their local pub and having a pint of their favorite IPA.

IPA, also known as India Pale Ale, is one of the most beloved beer styles today, known for its bold hop flavors, citrusy aromas, and refreshing bitterness. IPAs date back to the late 1700s during the height of the British East India Trading Company when Great Britain was sending goods and soldiers to India. They discovered that the heavier beers would spoil before reaching their destination 6 months later due to the warmer climate. In the 1780s, George Hodgson created a pale ale with higher alcohol content and a heavy dose of hops. Hops, a natural preservative, helped protect the beer from spoilage, while the extra alcohol gave it additional staying power. It was such a hit with British soldiers in India, that by the 1820s, it was officially dubbed “India Pale Ale.” IPAs became a staple at every British pub.

Over the past few decades, local craft breweries have started creating their own IPAs with local ingredients.
