Feliz Día de los Mu***os!

Día de los Mu***os, also known as Day of the Dead, is a Mexican holiday where families welcome back the souls of their dead relatives for a brief reunion celebrated with music and food. These celebration rituals date back around 3,000 years to the pre-Colombian Mesoamericans. Families create home alters, called ofrendas, covered in orange marigolds, photos of relatives who have passed away, offerings and food.

In medieval Spain, this day is known as All Souls Day. People would bring w**e and pan de ánimas (spirit bread) to the graves of loved ones as well as flowers and candles for the graves to guide the souls back to their homes. When the conquistadors came to the New World, they brought these traditions with them.

Halloween and the Day of the Dead share many commonalities. In addition to costumes, parades, food, drinks, and music, they also share the belief that veil between the spirit world and the human world is at its thinnest from October 31-November 2, allowing the spirits to travel home.

SPOTTED: VISITING BLACK CATS FOR NATIONAL CAT DAY

Happy National Cat Day!!! Misty and Shadow have seen so many cats in their travels around town and have even seen new places called cat cafes, where humans can adopt homeless cats. The ghosts always have fun around cats, as they love to play with the kitties and in turn scare their owners.

Did you know the Puritans associated black cats with witchcraft? However, in many other cultures, black cats are actually signs of good luck and are revered! 🖤

SPOTTED: GHOSTS ENTERING THEIR FANTASY ERA 🐉

After getting their pumpkin, Misty and Shadow saw a super cute bookstore, , right across the street. Our ghost friends were in need of some new spooky stories for Halloween night. Upon entering, they were greeted with so many books in so many genres they had never read before. They could spend hours exploring the new worlds and realms behind each cover.

They heard lots of whispers about bats and shadows in the night arriving at midnight. Wonder what kind of spooky arrival it could be?

HOW DID “GHOST TOURS” GET THEIR START? Here’s some interesting historical facts about the actual origins of modern day public “ghost tours” and how they originated right here in St. Augustine, Florida many decades ago…

Ghost Tours of St. Augustine Inc. was actually the very first organization to begin researching & cataloguing St. Augustine FL’s paranormal occurrences over 30 years ago. In doing this and then sharing that info with guests on a nightly evening tour that anyone could sign up for, they created what is now known as the modern day “ghost tour” which is popular all over in many different cities!

The late Sandy Craig, a history enthusiast & St Augustine native who’s family origins dated all the way back to the Spanish Minorcan settlers, joined with local historians, writers, and paranormal investigators as she wanted to create some type of evening activity for visiting overnight field trip groups for her local tour operator business. It was actually a very sleepy little town back then after 5pm, as hard as that may be to believe now!

So they spent over a year just researching & gathering stories through numerous interviews with residents, and combing through archives at the local Historical Society, before putting this new concept for a “tour” together. Her team even went on to actually write the first books on the town’s haunted history- which are still used in training even today by many other ghost tour companies all over… the rest, as they say, is history!

That legacy continues with a number of different haunted tour options available nightly. From the now famous Ghostly Experience lantern-lit nightly walking tours, to special Paranormal Investigations, Private VIP Ghost Tours and even Creepy Crawl Haunted Pub Tours (pub tours operated in partnership with St. Augustine City Walks Food & W**e Tours)

Ghost Tours of St. Augustine Inc is dedicated to sharing the city’s authentic haunted history and real reports of ghostly sightings, while keeping the past alive through documented accounts of the undead spirits who are still purported to roam the town. Had it not been for Ms Craig’s novel idea and interest in the paranormal, who knows if there’d be these types of tours today that we all love so much?!

SPOTTED: VISITING THE PUMPKIN PATCH 🎃

🎃 Happy National Pumpkin Day!!!! 🎃

Misty and Shadow decided to celebrate National Pumpkin Day by visiting one of the most famous pumpkin patches in Downtown St. Augustine. Misty and Shadow heard a fascinating story about this pumpkin patch. Back in 2016, when Hurricane Matthew swept through and flooded the town, the pumpkins at this church floated down various streets and ended up all over the neighborhood when the waters receded. The community came together, gathered the wayward pumpkins, and returned them to the church.

Misty and Shadow knew they had to visit the Pumpkin Church on National Pumpkin Day and they even found pumpkins to take home with them. The pumpkins were going fast, so make sure you get your pumpkins before they sell out!

SPOTTED: FLOATING THE GROUNDS OF FLAGLER COLLEGE

Have you heard that HGTV named St. Augustine as Florida’s best place to celebrate Halloween? Misty and Shadow completely agree and are enjoying themselves exploring the nation’s oldest city.

Our ghost friends always heard of an amazing hotel in St. Augustine called the Ponce de Leon Hotel where the New York elite would escape the cold and spend the winter. Misty floated through the halls trying to find her old friend Ida Alice, but Ida Alice was busy communicating with the spirits. While floating through campus Misty and Shadow found not only one but TWO Henry Flagler statues, one includes his cute doggie, Delos.

Misty and Shadow found it strange that everywhere they went they did not see any signs of the elite clientele who were rumored to stay there, but instead so many young people carrying books and talking to odd little boxes. Upon further investigation they discover that the grand Ponce de Leon Hotel had become Flagler College.

Misty and Shadow also heard that they were visiting on National Horror Movie Day, so they tried their best to scare the students at the gates.
