”Saved by the bell”? Most historians agree this term comes from the sport of boxing and the bell signifying the end of the round rather than from people rescued from early burials. However, the fear of being buried alive was prevalent during the 19th century when “safety coffins” were invented to ring a bell if the occupant woke up. The amazing researchers at findagrave.com found an example of the protected bell mechanism on this grave in Bonaventure Cemetery.

All Gave Some, Some Gave ALL.

Today Memorial Day is a national holiday honoring the men and women who died while serving our country in our armed forces.

Memorial Day was originally known as Decoration Day and became more celebrated following the Civil War.

On May 30, 1868, 20,000 Union and Confederate graves at Arlington National Cemetery were adorned with flowers. During World War I, red poppies became a symbol of remembrance after the poem “In Flanders Field”. In December 2000, a resolution was passed that at 3pm local time people across the country were encouraged to stop what they were doing and listen to the playing of “TAPS.”

However you spend Memorial Day this year, take a moment to remember those men and women who fought and died for the freedoms we have today. Happy Memorial Day.

It was a great night for ghost hunting in St.Augustine Friday. The EMF were lighting up and the EVP were coming through. We often host guests who are empathic or more connected to the spirit world and Friday was a great example of that. Our Paranormal Investigator, Steve, described it :
