Are you all aware of the great craftsman that we have in our group? Dave Osborn owns Little Lakes Canoe restoration. Here's a sample of his workmanship on a recently restored Rhinelander boat. Dave says: " Before and after photos of a 15’ Rhinelander Boat Company row boat owned by a Northwoods couple. It’s been in the shop for over a year and is now complete. In the spring it will once again ply the waters of Northern Wisconsin for another couple generations....or more."

Since folks seemed to like yesterday's tip here's another one. I was fishing on Friday when my trolling motor started spinning like Linda Blair's head in the Excorcist. Very frustrating and even the old "dip it in the lake" trick wouldn't work. The combo platter of cold weather and greasy gunk is the culprit. If you have one of these foot pedals it's pretty easy to take apart and clean the funk out. You will need a phillips head screwdriver and I suggest a small hemostat for removing and replacing the springs. Springs go first then you can start unscrewing the screws from the pad to separate the parts. Take your time and of course keep all the screws and parts together. CAUTION there are tiny magnets under the speed control and under the circuit board. Don't lose those! When you have the pedal all disassembled it's pretty easy to clean everything up. I use Dawn dish soap which is a good solvent that will degrease everything. Reverse your steps to put everything back together and problem solved. The toughest part is getting the three little springs back into place without knocking them out. You can get the exterior hook of the spring in place and put a little piece of tape on it to keep them from falling out while you get them centered in the holes which may help.

Just thought I'd pass along a little tip I picked up. If you want more action from the tails on your Medussa's try this. Get a pot of water boiling, dip the tails in the pot for about 20 seconds, then dip them into some cold water. I tried this yesterday and the results were noticeable. Definitely a lot more action on those tails after the treatment.

Quick musky tips. After my experiences the last few outings and sneaking out this afternoon for a quick trip with a buddy (one fish caught). Every musky I've had action from have been in shallow water (five feet or less) and remaining green weeds. I've tried fishing deeper structure and along deeper edges but have not seen action in those areas. Forecast for a while is relatively stable with not too much in the way of dropping temps so I would expect this pattern to hold for the time being. We have had some breezy days and if the wind is blowing into those shallow weeds that seems to enhance the bite. When the wind dies so does the action. Good luck out there.

Had a nice outing with the Fox family from Lisle, Illinois yesterday. Jake got a surprise when this 32" pike slurped down the leech he was chucking. Frankly I was surprised too when I saw the line go sliding under the motor skeg when the fish took a run under the boat. Bottom line was slime in the net and a pretty excited young man. Good times!
