If you see a tagged horseshoe crab here’s what you do.

As we reported in a previous social media post, reporting any sighting of a tagged animal is very important, and that includes tagged horseshoe crabs.

The Horseshoe Crab Cooperative Tagging Program in the U.S. is coordinated by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Tags are dispersed to state agencies, universities, and non-governmental organizations and are carefully attached onto healthy, mature horseshoe crabs on the left posterior point of the prosoma near the dorsal edge.

If you find a tagged horseshoe crab, do not remove the tag. Keeping in mind to limit disturbance to the crab, record the tag number by either taking a photo or by writing the tag number down, preferably without picking the crab up. Note the date, location, and condition of the crab (alive or deceased).

Report resighted horseshoe crab tag numbers at www.FWS.gov/crab tag/ or by calling 1-888-LIMULUS (1-888-546-8587). In return, you will receive information on when and where the crab was tagged.

Information collected as a function of resighting a tagged horseshoe crab provides data on horseshoe crab distribution, movement, longevity, and mortality.

Some good info if you’re visiting this summer.

The warmer temps have arrived and that means a few exciting things for Harbor Island as we ease into Summer 2022!!

1. May 1st began our 2022 Sea Turtle nesting season, so if you are an owner or a visitor, please be sure and help those mamas find a quiet, dark place to leave their eggs by turning off or shielding any beachfront light sources. Be sure and draw those shades/drapes and turn off any exterior lights. If you are exploring the beach at night, please use a red-filtered flashlight.

2. With those sweet sea turtles come some other not-so-sweet creatures that can really pack a punch...jellyfish! Please keep a close eye out for things when in the water (a Portuguese Man O' War was found on Fripp *yesterday* - yikes!). See image for some help in identifying all the different kinds of jellyfish Harbor Island experiences.

3. Food trucks will be kicking off Memorial Day weekend and will now be located over at The Green (adjacent to the courts). We are excited about some old friends and some new yummy things that will be available throughout the summer.

4. The Turtle's Nest is shifting back to their full time hours and they are your one-stop-shop for snacks, drinks, sunscreen, bug spray, a good book or you can even rent a bike, sports equipment for the courts or beach chairs!

We are looking forward to enjoying our beautiful island and all the joy it brings. We hope 2022 is our best summer yet!
