Two buildings, two very different stories, and one shared year in St. Helena history.
In the late 1800s, places like The Madrones and the Bank of St. Helena reflected a town in the middle of transformation, where hospitality, commerce, and Napa Valley’s early wine ambitions were beginning to take shape.
What began as The Madrones, a luxury resort tucked among the trees just north of town, would later become V Madrone and is now known as . Its story mirrors the evolution of St. Helena itself: constantly reinvented, yet deeply tied to its roots. The name AXR even pays tribute to the rootstock that helped save Napa Valley vineyards during the phylloxera epidemic of the late 19th century.
Meanwhile, the Bank of St. Helena stood at the center of a growing town, helping finance the businesses, vineyards, and dreams that would shape the region’s future. More than a century later, the building lives on as where pieces of the original bank, including the vault, still remain.
150 years later, both spaces continue to tell part of St. Helena’s story, not as relics of the past, but as places still gathering people together today.
