There’s something special about gathering around good music, good conversation, and a little friendly competition.

This Friday, May 1, you’re invited to “𝗖𝗶𝗿𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗪𝗮𝗴𝗼𝗻𝘀” at the Pony Express National Museum Pony Bar/Goetz Museum, featuring Dick & Mignon’s Soda Shop.

From 𝟭𝟬:𝟬𝟬 𝗮.𝗺. 𝘁𝗼 𝟮:𝟬𝟬 𝗽.𝗺., enjoy live music every 30 minutes with guitar and accordion, along with games that bring people together—cards, checkers, chess, and more.

Ben will be offering dedicated chess time throughout the day, whether you’re learning for the first time or ready for a challenge.

Lunch will be provided by a sponsor, featuring Marek’s sandwiches with classic root beer or sarsaparilla. Floats and commemorative mugs will also be available.

It’s a relaxed, welcoming way to spend part of your Friday—connecting with others and enjoying a bit of St. Joseph’s unique character.

Today in History: The First Pony Express Makes Its First Run

This evening in 1860, a solitary rider galloped his horse out of St. Joseph, MO, carrying a pistol, a water bag, and a pouch with 49 letters as he started the first Pony Express delivery. Every 15 miles, he’d change horses and gallop to the next mail station.

After 80 miles, he handed over the mail to another man, the first first of 39 handoffs to fresh riders. Ten days later, the mail arrived in Sacramento after travelling over 2,000 miles.

It was the first of over three 300 runs by the Pony Express, which were two weeks faster than mail delivery by stagecoach. The express riders gained a reputation for being young, courageous, and fast. They never carried more than 20 pounds of mail and even refused to carry rifles to save the weight.
