Another longtime Green Bluff favorite that has been creating fall family traditions for more than 25 years.

Expect pumpkins, activities, rides, vendors, food and plenty for kids to do during their fall festival.

If you haven’t done a Green Bluff pumpkin patch weekend before, it’s definitely worth doing at least once.

📍 COEUR D’ALENE

🎃 PRAIRIE HOME FARM

This one is completely different from the big commercial pumpkin festivals — and that is exactly why people love it.

Prairie Home Farm is a 100+ year-old farm on the edge of the Rathdrum Prairie that has been opening its pumpkin patch for more than 20 years.

You’ll find pumpkins, farm animals, an old barn, vintage tractors and equipment, and some fantastic fall photo opportunities.

It’s simple, old-fashioned and very North Idaho.

The pumpkin patch traditionally opens during October.

📍 SANDPOINT

🎃 BUSHEL & A PECK FARM

A fun North Idaho pumpkin patch with pumpkins, family activities and some especially good fall photo spots.

It’s located near the corner of Highway 200 and Shingle Mill outside Sandpoint and makes a great stop if you’re heading north for a fall drive.

September may be one of the best months of the year to explore Western Montana.

The summer crowds start thinning out, the evenings get cooler, fall colors begin showing up in the mountains — and the event calendar is still absolutely packed.

We searched around Missoula, Hamilton, Darby, Plains, Bigfork, Kalispell, Whitefish, Libby, Troy, the Flathead Valley, Bitterroot Valley and beyond and found fairs, rodeos, chainsaw carving, Highland Games, car shows, farmers markets, live music, a Renaissance Festival, mountain activities, bluegrass, quilt shows, stargazing and plenty more.

International chainsaw artists descend on Libby and turn massive logs into detailed sculptures over four days during the Clash of the Carvers International Chainsaw Carving Championship.

There are also quick-carve competitions and auctions throughout the weekend before Sunday’s final auction and championship awards.

🍺 SEPTEMBER 11 — FALL RENDEZVOUS BREWFEST

The Montana Brewers Association brings breweries from across the state together along the Clark Fork River.

The big distinction with this festival: everything being poured is made in Montana.

Admission includes a collectible tasting glass and b**r samples.

📍 Blue Mountain Observatory near Missoula

🌌 September 12 — 9 p.m. 🌌 September 18 — 8:30 p.m.

University of Montana astronomers and members of the Western Montana Astronomical Association open the mountaintop observatory to the public.

Visitors can look through the observatory’s 16-inch telescope, along with additional telescopes set up outside, and learn how to identify planets, stars, constellations and other objects.

Tickets are required, and the events are weather, cloud and smoke dependent.

📖 THROUGH SEPTEMBER 14 — ANNE FRANK: A HISTORY FOR TODAY

📍 Wachholz College Center at Flathead Valley Community College, Kalispell 💲 Free

The traveling exhibition tells the history of the Holocaust through Anne Frank and her family, combining family photographs with historical images and information about what was happening around them.

Free self-guided viewing is available on weekdays through September 14.

📍 The A-Bar, Ferndale

Bluegrass musicians and fans gather near the Swan Mountains for three days built around picking, jamming and live music.

The event includes bluegrass groups, local vendors, Montana-made products, food trucks and plenty of informal picking around camp.

Ferndale sits just east of Flathead Lake at the entrance to the Swan Valley, making this one easy to turn into a weekend road trip.

⚔️ SEPTEMBER 19–20 — MISSOULA RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL

📍 Missoula County Fairgrounds

📅 Saturday: 10 a.m.–6 p.m. 📅 Sunday: 10 a.m.–5 p.m.

The Missoula Renaissance Festival returns for its second year with costumes, medieval entertainment and live jousting at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. each day.

Children 9 and younger get in free.

This is one of North Idaho’s classic Labor Day weekend traditions.

Paul Bunyan Days has been held since 1968 and celebrates St. Maries’ logging heritage with a carnival, vendors, competitions, fireworks, a demolition derby, parade and car show.

Schweitzer’s annual Fall Fest brings four days of mountain views, live music, food trucks, vendors and more than 80 b**rs, c***rs and seltzers.

There are also chairlift rides and family activities throughout the weekend.

It’s one of the last big summer weekends on the mountain before fall settles in.

Instead of visiting a traditional gallery, this self-guided driving tour takes you directly into working artists’ studios.

Meet painters, photographers, sculptors, jewelers, potters, glass artists and other creators throughout the Sandpoint area.

🛒 SEPTEMBER 4–7 — UNDER THE FREEWAY FLEA MARKET

Yes — it really is underneath Interstate 90.

The massive Labor Day weekend flea market brings 80+ vendors underneath the freeway viaduct near the historic Northern Pacific Depot.

Expect antiques, collectibles, vintage finds, food and just about anything else someone can fit on a vendor table.

Organizers say the event attracts more than 10,000 visitors.

📍 Silver Mountain Resort, Kellogg

Take the gondola to the top of Silver Mountain for dinner, mountain views and live music.

Reservations are required, and the gondola ride is included with the dinner experience.

The Hayden Senior Center’s third annual event brings together vintage and classic vehicles for a cruise and car show.

Silverwood’s 25th annual Coaster Classic brings classic cars from around the Northwest right into the theme park.

Car-show viewing is included with regular park admission.

Classic wooden boats gather at Priest Lake for one of the more unique events of the month.

The day begins with a boat show and brunch at Elkins Resort before the boats parade across the lake toward Hill’s Resort.

The 10th annual Panhandle Bluesfest brings several days of live blues music, camping, vendors and open-mic sessions to its new location in Oldtown.

Friday and Saturday feature several regional blues acts, including Sammy Eubanks and the Bobby Patterson Band.

You can spend one weekend in the mountains at Schweitzer, the next wandering underneath the freeway at a flea market in Wallace, catch fireworks in St. Maries, see wooden boats on Priest Lake, run a race, visit an artist’s studio or spend an afternoon at Oktoberfest.

The hardest part might be deciding where to go first.
