Just a short drive from St. Simons, step back in time at The Horton House — one of the oldest standing tabby structures in Georgia and a must-see for history lovers visiting the Golden Isles. Built in 1743 by Major William Horton, one of General James Oglethorpe’s top military aides, this remarkable site offers a glimpse into Georgia’s early colonial days. Horton was stationed at Fort Frederica on St. Simons Island and used Jekyll to grow crops that supplied the fort — including hops and barley used to brew Georgia’s very first beer! Today, visitors can explore the preserved tabby ruins of Horton’s home, as well as the nearby remnants of his brewery and the DuBignon family cemetery, whose descendants later sold Jekyll Island to the famous Jekyll Island Club.
