Hilltopper Guest House, circa 1790, is located off of Rt 22 in historic Salem, NY (settled in 1764) on Gillis Hill Lane. Originally, the entire 100 acres was farmed. In the 1920's, a stream bisecting the farmland was overrun by beavers, who dammed the stream causing it to overflow into the surrounding area. In the 1970's, the naturalist owner, Doc Potter, a veterinarian, took this flooding as an o
pportunity to create a wetlands. Today, this beautiful marsh is home to the Great blue, green & black-crowned herons; kingfishers, mallards, otters & white-tailed deer. Milkweed, cat-of-nine tails, thistle(nijer) & many species of grasses are abundant. The current owner, Bob Lang, has opened up the farm to birders, and other naturalists interested in hiking & exploring the natural wonders of the grounds. Families can enjoy canoeing & fishing on the 2 ponds; building a bonfire next to the Observation cabin to look out over the Green Mountains of Vermont & watch the stars at night. Couples can enjoy the privacy and tranquility of the property & relax by a cozy, romantic fire in the living room by the wood burning fireplace. Come for the day and spend the night.
