The Hida Alps are some of the highest and most rugged mountains in Japan. Outside of winter, an extensive hut system allows for long rambles in the high-country without having to carry big packs. Routes are rigged with ropes, chains and ladders to expedite movement without technical gear. The relief is impressive here, with peaks rising well over 10,000’ from onsen filled valleys ~7000’ below. Mt. Okuhotaka and Mt. Yarigatake (pictured first) are the 3rd and fifth highest peaks in Japan, respectively. Mt Yakadake (also pictured) is an anomaly here in that it’s an active volcano with steaming vents all over it. It was really cool to see all the lush bamboo ground cover that would normally be covered in winter. We were picking our lines through the birch for sure!
