Aside from the news story, I’m posting this article from KSL because the photo of the city shows a large “W” in the foreground. Fun fact: That’s an original neon “W” from an earlier incarnation of the Walker sign. It was restored several years ago and placed atop West High School.

Utah's capital city might fall short of being a mile high in elevation, but county tourism officials are launching a catchy new way to capitalize on Salt Lake City's proximity to mountains.

Salt Lake is "America's Mountain City," Visit Salt Lake officials are proclaiming, in an effort to highlight its proximity to Olympic-level resorts and recreation. Kaitlin Eskelson, the organization's president and CEO, contends that no other city offers an emerging urban experience that's also a 40-minute drive from mountain resorts.

If you’ve been on one of my tours you know that I love sharing lesser-known stories of Utah. That’s why I’m sharing this great post from Lagoon today. -Todd

This we are looking back at an important chapter in Lagoon’s history as we honor the legacy of Robert E. Freed.

When the Freed family took over the lease of Lagoon after World War II, local Farmington city ordinances and lease terms legally forced the segregation of the park’s swimming pool and ballroom.

Bob refused to accept this discrimination. He partnered with the Utah branch of the NAACP to successfully fight and change local laws. By 1949, Lagoon became one of the very FIRST AMUSEMENT PARKS IN THE UNITED STATES to fully desegregate, welcoming all guests regardless of race.

His dedication to equality earned him the NAACP’s “Human Rights” award and Utah’s first lifetime membership to the organization. Today, we celebrate his courage to break barriers and ensure that Lagoon could be a place of joy for everyone!

Preservation Utah does amazing work, and their downtown tours are fantastic. This Saturday they’ll pass by the Walker Building, and in November I’ll be doing a fundraising tour for them on the rooftop! Tickets on their website go on sale Oct. 1. -Todd

One of our city’s stranger landmarks has fallen. Goodbye Coachman’s. The food was so-so, but the memories are priceless.

Coachman’s on 13th and State is finally getting torn down, which honestly feels weirdly personal.
After like a million “Coachman’s might be demolished” stories, someone finally just went, “Yeah, knock it down, it’s fine.”

Goodbye old friend, and the awesome sign that looked like it was judging your life choices since the 60s. I wonder if anyone salvaged the red booths.
