Probably the right call after the last storm knocked out Hwy 12…

A mandatory evacuation for all visitors on Hatteras Island takes effect at 8 p.m. tonight (Friday, October 16). A state of emergency has also been issued for Hatteras Island.

The order applies to visitors in Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, Avon, Buxton, Frisco and Hatteras Village. Residents of Hatteras Island and areas north of Oregon Inlet are not under an evacuation order.

An updated forecast indicates an increased threat from a developing coastal nor’easter. Prolonged coastal flooding and repeated ocean overwash are expected to threaten N.C. Highway 12, potentially cutting off roadway access to and from Hatteras Island for an extended period.

Visitors should leave before conditions deteriorate and roadway access is compromised. Conditions are expected to worsen Saturday and into Sunday morning, with the potential for ocean overwash around high tide.

Visitors with upcoming reservations should contact their accommodations provider to adjust their plans. Do not travel to Hatteras Island while the evacuation order is in effect.

Looking at the weather updates across the board today, the Outer Banks might be facing another long duration period with strong NE winds and high seas, this weekend into next week. As always, I will be out on foot documenting the storm in real time. Anyone visiting Hatteras Island or Ocracoke Island, should be aware of the possibility that Highway 12 could be impacted again and ocean over wash and flooding will most likely occur. The road could potentially be closed and you could become stranded on the island longer than anticipated. Please keep this in mind with your travel plans. Stay safe. Prayers for this vulnerable stretch of coastline🙏.

I see us closing in approximately 45 minutes (10:30 ish).
We open on Sundays so that people can be caffeinated, as there are no other coffee shops open Sundays this time of the year….BUT, I have a very strong desire to be creative and cook comfort foods!

Usually I would just sneak away and leave the other two to do it, but Saylor’s been keeping an awful close eye on me today….

Absolutely gorgeous. Love this drive on and off Hatteras. Once you get past Nags Head, it’s nothing but breathtaking.

Shout out to NC DOT for their Herculean effort to build a makeshift gravel road, allowing visitors to finally leave the island Tuesday afternoon. All guests are welcome back starting Thursday at 7:00 am.
