Blast from the Past: 2012 Photo Safari in San Diego

I think most of you know that I have really loved leading several photo safaris as I've been privileged to travel around this globe. Well, tonight, I just ran across the link to this YouTube video that my friend, Ken Shelton, created during our day-long photo safari in San Diego when thousands of our mutual education technology friends were gathered for the annual ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference.

I'm so happy that I stumbled across this video. Ken was a fabulous participant/helper on our photo safari...and the fact that he captured so much of the action by group members during the day has now become just plain priceless.

So, watch and enjoy! Several of my ADE buddies will, no doubt, enjoy seeing themselves in this video. Andy Losik Macy Anne Cardona Katy Ayesiga Chuck Ginter Ty Richardson Photography Craig Nansen

Watching this has made me want to conduct yet more photo safaris, especially with my photography-loving friends around the world!

Thanks, Ken Shelton, for making and sharing this video!

A day of fun, creativity, sharing, and learning centered around the art of Photography.

Here in Northeast Mississippi, it seems that the weather may be changing. A touch of Fall hides just around the corner. What does that mean?

Photographers, get your cameras ready for some Fall splendor. Put fresh batteries in your cameras, make sure your lenses are clean, and double check all your field equipment to make sure that when you venture out, you will be ready to capture the best pictures as you see them.

What are your plans for photography in a new season? Let's hear from you.

Have you been on a photo safari lately? Or, have you LED a photo safari?

If/When you go on a photo safari, what is your purpose? Why are you going? What would you like to learn? Who would you like to be with?

I'm really interested in knowing your desires, your experiences, your best experiences, and/or your specific thoughts.

Main focus (pun intended): Have fun while learning, whether you're in a crowd or all alone.

Exercise your creativity while on a photo safari. Try several techniques/approaches. Share your photos with others on your safari...with the idea of getting their ideas about what could make your photo more interesting. Or, maybe give advice.
By all means, have fun....but GET OUT THERE AND SHOOT!

Results: Photo Walk in Historic Downtown San Antonio
Sunday, June 23, 2013

What a wonderful, successful Photo Walk we had in San Antonio, TX on Sunday, June 23, 2013! At the annual ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) Conference, Craig Nansen and I co-hosted the 5th Annual ISTE/ADE Photo Walk/Safari.

Our "official" headcount was 172 people.

The walk portion of the event was held from 8-10 AM. We gathered at the Gonzalez Convention Center, posed for a group photo and announced instructions, then all walked 3 blocks to the Alamo. At the Alamo, we were met by several more walkers. There, we also made another group photo.

Participants strolled through the grounds of the Alamo, making photos as they walked. Then, each person was free to go on their own way. Many sub-groups formed as people ventured into the myriad of historic and picturesque places throughout San Antonio.

A few of us continued on a genuine Photo Safari for the remainder of the day, finishing up at 4:00 PM.

This was truly a successful event! And, many who participated are eagerly awaiting the next ISTE/ADE Photo Walk that will be held in Atlanta, GA in June 2013.

Notice to all photographers in the Tupelo, MS area--

You're invited to participate in a FREE Photo Safari in downtown Tupelo. So, bring your camera (doesn't matter what kind, even if it's just a smartphone), some comfortable walking shoes (we'll be walking a lot), maybe a bottle of water to stay refreshed, and join us for a morning of fun photographing in our city.

Date: Saturday, March 31, 2012 [Bad weather cancels]
Gathering Location: Lyric Theater, Broadway Street
Time: 8:30 am - 12:30 pm

Planned route: Convene at the Lyric Theater, then walk East to Front Street. Turn South to Main Street, then East to Fairpark. We will gather for comments at Fairpark. (Most of us will walk this route. You're free to drive your car and stop along the way to make photos if walking is hard for you.)
Next stop: South end of Broadway Street, near the Gardner-Watson Ice Company warehouse dock. The purpose for this stop is to learn how to make a HDR (High Dynamic Range) photo. You might want to bring along a tripod for this one, if you have one.

If time permits, we will drive to the Oren Dunn City Museum on West Main Street. There are some fabulous objects both inside and outside that we can photograph. We think you'll LOVE this stop.
NOTICE: The museum has a $3 admission fee for adults, so this is your only cost for the photo safari.

We will end the photo safari at the Oren Dunn Museum.

After the photo safari, we will ask you to look through your images, then choose the 3 "best" photos that you would like to share with others. We will give you a web site where you can upload your photos. The person whose photos are selected as "favorites" will be eligible for a prize.

For this Photo Safari, I will be assisted by Niki Peel, Assistant Principal at Tupelo High School. Niki is a fellow Apple Distinguished Educator. She and I will be leading several photo safaris this year, including a major event in San Diego, CA in late June, then at Willowood Ranch in North Texas in mid-July.

In case you would like to know more about a photo safari, you can download a free copy of my latest eBook, "Leading Your Own Photo Safari," from http://www.nctp.com/photosafari. I hope you will enjoy it.

Pass the word to your friends and let's have a great time on our Photo Safari.

Please contact me by email if you would like to participate -- [email protected]
