Happy Veterans Day to all the brave men and women. We are incredibly fortunate to have the freedoms that we have because of those who have served and continue to protect us.

My dad Porfirio served in the Korean War. He never spoke about it much. I so am grateful to have these images and post it every Veteran’s Day.

Mitla’s Talking Walls: Geometry that Tells Ancestral Secrets 🌀

In the Oaxaca valley, Mitla stands as a temple of silence and symbols. Unlike other pre-Hispanic cities that sought greatness with colossal pyramids, here the mystery is in the details: walls covered with geometric Greeks so exact that they seem made with modern tools, although they were carved by hand more than a thousand years ago.

Each room is different. No pattern is repeated, as if each wall had its own voice. For some they were simple decorations; for others, codes of power: genealogies, maps of the cosmos, time sequences or keys to cross the threshold to the underworld.

Mitla means “Place of the Dead”. And it is possible that these Greeks were more than ornaments: perhaps they were spiritual guides, visual languages that accompanied souls on their eternal journey.

Today, between its walls, one feels that the stones still hold secrets. And perhaps, as the ancient Zapotecs used to say, it is enough to learn to listen for them to speak.

Since 1870 — baking through centuries.
I visited Panadería Vazconiq, a true relic in the heart of Mexico City’s Centro Histórico. Founded in 1870, it’s one of the oldest bakeries in the country.

Walking through its doors feels like stepping into another time. You can still see traces of the 19th century in its architecture, smell the timeless aroma of pan dulce, and taste the legacy passed down through generations.

Through revolutions, modernizations, and city chaos, Vazconiq remains a silent witness to history—with fresh bread on the counter.

If you’re in downtown CDMX, don’t miss this historic treasure.

Exposed concrete, bold geometry, and a raw aesthetic that still commands presence across the city.

Brutalism emerged after World War II, seeking to create functional public spaces using accessible materials and structural honesty. In Mexico City, this movement became a symbol of modernity between the 60s and 80s, leaving us buildings that are now part of our urban memory.

These gray walls tell stories of a Mexico that dared to think big. From the National Auditorium to the Anahuacalli Museum, these spaces continue to withstand the test of time, inspiring photographers, architects, and anyone who understands that beauty can also be heavy, rough, and real.

📍 Which of these brutalist gems is your favorite? Let me know in the comments.
